ISRO Successfully Launches X-Ray Polarimeter Satellite; Will Study Black Holes, Other Celestial Objects

ISRO on Monday successfully launched its maiden X-Ray Polarimeter Satellite that would offer several insights into celestial objects like black holes.

ISRO's ever reliable Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) in its C58 mission, placed the primary X-Ray Polarimeter satellite XPoSat into a 650 km Low Earth Orbit as intended after lifting off at the pre-fixed time of 9.10 am from the first launch pad in Sriharikota.

As the 25-hour countdown concluded, the 44.4-metre-tall rocket lifted off majestically with thunderous applause from spectators who had descended here in large numbers at this spaceport situated about 135 km east of Chennai.

The X-ray Polarimeter Satellite (XPoSat) is aimed to investigate the polarisation of intense X-ray sources in space.

According to ISRO, it is the first dedicated scientific satellite from the space agency to carry out research in space-based polarisation measurements of X-ray emission from celestial sources.

The X-Ray polarisation serves as a crucial diagnostic tool for examining the radiation mechanism and geometry of celestial sources.

The primary payload of XPoSat is POLIX (Polarimeter Instrument in X-Rays) which is designed to measure polarimetry parameters by Raman Research Institute and XSPECT (X-ray Spectroscopy and Timing) built by the U R Rao Satellite Centre, Bengaluru. The Mission life is about five years.

ISRO will also launch the state-of-the-art joint venture satellite with NASA — NISAR — in the first quarter of 2024. Built at a cost of $1.5 billion (nearly Rs. 12,500 crore), NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) is targeted for launch onboard India's GSLV rocket.

Data from NISAR will be highly suitable for studying the land ecosystems, deformation of solid earth, mountain and polar cryosphere, sea ice, and coastal oceans on a regional to global scale.

Resident Evil 4 for iPhone review

Resident Evil 4 has a special place in gaming history. Released back in 2005 for the GameCube and later for the PlayStation 2, it was a paragon of the third-person survival horror genre with its incredibly tense action sequences, amazing level design, terrifying enemies, and memorable characters and writing. It carved a niche for itself and it was for many — including myself — their favorite installment in the series. Having played that version on a PS2 all those years ago, I was genuinely stoked to see it getting a proper remaster earlier this year along the lines of Resident Evil...

An earlier leak suggested that the Nothing Phone 2a will be listed at $400 (roughly Rs. 33,200). This leak also showed a PVT unit of the phone that featured a horizontal camera module placed centrally towards the top of the back panel, while the front panel was seen with a centred hole-punch slot for the front camera. It was also seen with a redesigned Glyph Interface.

Meanwhile, a recent report had claimed that the Nothing Phone 2a could include a 1/1.5-inch 50-megapixel Samsung S5KNG9 primary sensor alongside a 1/2.76-inch 50-megapixel Samsung S5KJN1 sensor with an ultrawide lens at the back. It may also get a 32-megapixel Sony IMX615 front camera sensor.

The Nothing Phone 2a has been tipped to come with a MediaTek Dimenisty 7200 SoC and a 6.7-inch  120Hz AMOLED panel with a resolution of 1,084 x 2,412 pixels. It is likely to ship with Android 14-based Nothing OS 2.5. The phone is expected to launch at the 'Nothing to See' MWC event in Barcelona on February 27.

My top 4 phones of 2023 - Prasad

2023 was a bit of a surprise. If you had asked me at the beginning of the year for this list, I wouldn't have included most of them, even if I knew they were coming. One, in particular, caught me completely by surprise and every time I mention it to people I have to emphasize just how serious I am about liking this device, lest they think I'm joking. The four devices listed below were the ones that naturally came to mind while writing this down. I could have included one more for the sake of a more pleasing top 5 list but everything else I used this year had at least one annoying quirk...

Xiaomi SU7 Electric Vehicle Officially Teased, Confirmed to Run on HyperOS

Xiaomi's first launch event explicitly focusing on EV technology will take place later today (December 28). Ahead of it, the electronics brand has posted a teaser on social media offering a glimpse at the company's first-ever passenger car, an all-electric sedan called the Xiaomi SU7. The SU in the moniker stands for Speed Ultra. The four-wheeler is confirmed to come with Xiaomi's HyperOS operating system. The EV is shown in a sedan-style design with a grey shade with five-spoke alloy wheels paired with Michelin tyres.

Lei Jun, Chief Executive Officer Xiaomi posted the first official look of the upcoming Xiaomi SU7 via X (formerly Twitter). The post includes a caption — ‘Hello, Xiaomi SU7 Welcome to Human x Car x Home' — suggesting the four-wheeler's integration with smartphone and smart home accessories. It is confirmed to be powered by the HyperOS operating system.

The poster indicates a grey finish for the Xiaomi SU7. It is seen with a sedan-style design with five-spoke alloy wheels paired with Michelin tyres with a Mi logo on the wheel caps. The side view mirror seems to include a camera similar to a Tesla car. Lei Jun already announced that the company prioritised intelligent technology in the new EV by drawing inspiration from advanced car systems like the Tesla Model S. He has posted a few interesting details about the Xiaomi SU7 including the meaning behind the name.

Xiaomi has already announced that it will host the company's first EV launch event outside China, dubbed "Stride" on December 28. The event will begin at 2:00pm Beijing time (11:30am IST) and will last for three hours. The event will not see any product release instead Lei Jun confirmed that the focus will be on the technology behind Xiaomi's first electric car.

The company has not disclosed any technical specifications for the SU7. It is currently in trial production and will hit the domestic market in a few months. Pricing details are still under wraps but Lei Jun promised that it would "exceed your expectations."

It is likely that Xiaomi may unveil at least three different models with varying ranges and features — Xiaomi SU7, Xiaomi SU7 Pro, and Xiaomi SU7 Ultra. The Xiaomi SU7 is expected to have a 210km/h speed for the lower-end model and the SU7 Max variant may offer up to 265 km/h speed.

Xiaomi 12 Pro is littered with features, but is that enough? We discuss this on Orbital, the Gadgets 360 podcast. Orbital is available on Spotify, Gaana, JioSaavn, Google Podcasts, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music and wherever you get your podcasts.

My top 4 phones of 2023 - Ro

For me, 2023 felt a bit stale. Last year I even got excited about some of midrangers, but this time around I couldn't find one that stands out. Even the premium segment wasn't particularly impressive to me, so that's why I picked only four phones for my top list. One brand that's missing from my list is Samsung. Even though I'm not a huge Samsung fan, I've always liked the S Ultra series, but the Galaxy S23 Ultra just feels like more of the same to me. The same goes for the Galaxy Z Fold5 - it's good, but unexciting. Xiaomi 13 Ultra Let's start with my daily driver - the Xiaomi 13...

Poco X6 Series India Launch Seemingly Teased by Poco India Head Himanshu Tandon

Poco X6 series is expected to launch in India soon. It is expected to succeed the Poco X5 lineup which was first unveiled globally in February this year. The Poco X5 Pro debuted in India with a Snapdragon 778G chipset the same month, while the Poco X5 model launched in the country with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 SoC in March. The anticipated Poco X6 series is also likely to include a base and a Pro model like its predecessors. Now the India launch of the Poco X6 series has been teased, suggesting it will debut soon.

In a post on X, the social media platform previously called Twitter, Poco India Head Himanshu Tandon shared a image with the caption conveying the season's greetings and the promise of something new. This suggests the upcoming launch of the next Poco X-series model in India.

This is expected to be one of the Poco X6 series models, expected to arrive as the successors to the X5 lineup. The Poco X6 Pro model has also been spotted on several certification sites, and based on this year's release schedule, it may be the model to first debut in the country, followed by the launch of the base model a few weeks later.

The Poco X6 Pro was recently spotted on the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) and IMEI websites with the model number 23122PCD1I. An NBTC listing of the same model showed that the phone may launch with support for GSM, WCDMA LTE, and NR networks which suggests 5G connectivity. It is expected to be the rebranded version of the Redmi K70E, which was launched in China in November this year. The base Poco X6 could debut as a rebadged Redmi Note 13.

The Poco X5 is currently priced in India at Rs. 18,999 and Rs. 20,999 for its 6GB + 128GB and 8GB + 256GB options, respectively. The Poco X5 Pro, on the other hand, is presently listed at Rs. 16,999 and Rs. 22,999 for its 6GB + 128GB and 8GB + 256GB variants.

Top 10 most popular reviews of 2023: Q3

The third quarter of the year was relatively quiet for the most part with few major announcements until September. The first half of the month was marked by the Apple event, in which we saw the arrival of the iPhone 15 series. Everyone was talking about the new cameras of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, and we were not surprised to see the review was the most popular during the Q3 period. The phone also came with new colors a Titanium body that made the device lighter if not quite as durable. The three summer months also saw the launch of the Phone (2) by Nothing, a truly remarkable...

Coinbase Gains Licence to Operate as Virtual Asset Services Provider in France

US-based crypto exchange Coinbase has successfully acquired a licence to operate as a virtual asset service provider (VASP) in France. This also means that Coinbase is now a registered entity with Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF), the French financial markets authority. While Binance has amassed approval internationally outside US, Coinbase appears to be following the same trajectory amid increasing scrutiny from the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The third-largest crypto firm by trading volume globally, Coinbase can now offer retail, institutional, and ecosystem products service options in France.

Furthermore, this fresh registration also opens doors for Coinbase to extend custody service for digital assets along with facilitating their buying and selling deals as well, said the exchange in a blog post.

“We're focused on bringing the benefits of crypto to the world. Achieving VASP status in France allows us to continue to grow globally in the best possible way, onboarding the next 1 billion people into crypto while ensuring consumer's assets are secure and that compliance is prioritised. France has a thriving Web3 ecosystem,” said Daniel Seifert, Vice President and Regional Managing Director, EMEA at Coinbase.

Earlier in May this year, France invited crypto players looking to set their businesses outside of the US. At the time, this invitation had come just a day after European Union (EU) gave its final approval to MiCA — a comprehensive set of regulations that have been curated to uniformly govern the digital assets sector in all of the EU regions.

Coinbase has especially mentioned that the clarity which the MiCA laws bring to the crypto sector in the EU has been of great help growing for its business there.

“The recent adoption of MiCA by European Union policymakers represents a pivotal moment for cryptocurrencies in the region. The regulatory clarity MiCA provides to the industry is hugely welcome,” the Coinbase blog noted.

My top 5 phones of 2023 - Ivan

Hello, I'm Ivan and I take the majority of the lifestyle images on GSMArena dot com. You could say I like the phones with the best cameras the most, though it's more complicated than that. The wide-angle cameras on most phones are great these days and they take mostly the same-looking photos. It's the zooms that I like most - they give me the creative freedom to snap interesting shots with unique perspectives. So, in reverse order, here are my top 5 phones of the year. Nothing Phone (2) Wait a minute, the Nothing Phone (2) doesn't even have a telephoto camera, what's up with that?...

Weekly poll results: the Galaxy A25 overshadows the Galaxy A15 5G and A15

As is tradition, Samsung starts the 2024 launches early with entry-level Galaxy A phones. This time it’s the Galaxy A25, A15 5G and A15 (4G) and we already know which of the three will be the most popular model, thanks to last week’s poll. The Samsung Galaxy A25 is the clear favorite – of those who are in the market for an entry-level phone, this one will usually make the shortlist. Quite a few people think that it is overpriced, so a price cut will certainly raise the A25’s fortunes. This is perhaps less a win for the A25 and more of a loss for the Galaxy A15 5G. The issue is not...

Honor V Purse in for review

A very rare phone just landed in HQ - or should we say a very high-tech fashion accessory. With the leather case strap attachment, the Honor V Purse certainly looks the part. Despite its limited launch in China, the phone attracted genuine interest when it launched back in September and drew quite a few "wows". The strap accessory comes in a separate box, while the phone itself ships with a 35W charger and a USB cable. The case accessory attaches to the V Purse's frame and is not easy to get off. We don't expect it to fall off unexpectedly at any point. The chain itself is made...

But in addition to the release date, today's leak from Smartprix details most of the specs and confirms some previously known ones. Fossil watches will no longer run on Wear OS, reports claim

According to multiple reports from people close to Fossil or those who have asked Fossil employees, the brand will no longer release Wear OS-powered smartwatches. This means the Fossil Gen 7 watch isn't happening after all. This seems to align with recent events around Fossil, or the lack thereof. The last Fossil Gen 6 watch was released two years ago and the usual summer release schedule didn't bring a Fossil Gen 7 watch this year. Not to mention, the device is surprisingly absent from the usual rumor mill. Last but not least, Fossil is currently doing a huge sale of its Fossil Gen...

IMD Tests Use of AI in Weather Forecasts Amid Rise in Floods, Droughts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is testing artificial intelligence (AI) to build climate models to improve weather forecasting as torrential rains, floods and droughts proliferate across the vast country, a top weather official said.

Global warming has triggered more intense clashes of weather systems in India in recent years, increasing extreme weather events, which the independent Centre for Science and Environment estimates have killed nearly 3,000 people this year.

Weather agencies around the world are focussing on AI, which can bring down cost and improve speed, and which Britain's Met Office says could "revolutionise" weather forecasting, with a recent Google-funded model found to have outperformed conventional methods.

Accurate weather forecasting is particularly crucial in India, a country of 1.4 billion people, many impoverished, and the world's second-largest producer of rice, wheat and sugar.

The IMD provides forecasts based on mathematical models using supercomputers. Using AI with an expanded observation network could help generate higher-quality forecast data at lower cost.

The department expects the AI-based climate models and advisories it is developing to help improve forecasts, K.S. Hosalikar, head of climate research and services at IMD, told Reuters.

The weather office has used AI to generate public alerts regarding heatwaves and such diseases as malaria, Hosalikar said. It plans to increase weather observatories, providing data down to village level, potentially offering higher-resolution data for forecasts, he said.

The government said on Thursday it wants to generate weather and climate forecasts by incorporating AI into traditional models, and has set up a centre to test the idea through workshops and conferences.

"An AI model doesn't require the high cost involved in running a supercomputer - you can even run it out of a good quality desktop," said Saurabh Rathore, an assistant professor at Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi.

Better data is also needed to make the most out of AI, experts say.

"Without having high-resolution data in space and time, no AI model for location-specific magnification of existing model forecasts is feasible," said Parthasarathi Mukhopadhyay, a climate scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology.

Metaverse Platform ‘The Sandbox’ Said to Double Down on India-Related Initiatives: Details

The Sandbox, a metaverse platform based in Hong Kong, has put its India expansion plan at the top of its priorities. In the next two years, The Sandbox is looking to make India its largest market. Despite having crypto and NFTs as elements of its operational ecosystem, the metaverse platform has shown confidence that it would see growth in India. Currently, the Web3 industry is largely unregulated in the country and the government has maintained a strict stance against letting Indians engage deeply with the volatile sector.

The Sandbox is an entity of venture capital giant Animoca Brands. It first entered India this year and established its Indian entity called the BharatBox. The Sandbox teamed up with global venture accelerator Brinc to create BharatBox, that envelops cultural elements of the country such as Bollywood.

“We are ready to engage with and help regulators to discuss the space,” media reports quoted The Sandbox co-founder Sebastien Borget as saying. A complete list of laws for Web3 firms to ab ide by in India are expected to arrive by mid-2025.

In the last few months, BharatBox has forged partnerships with three media mammoths in India -- Eros Entertainment, Hungama, and Shemaroo. As per CoinDesk, BharatBox has struck a total of 25 deals this year.

To process crypto trading and transactions within its ecosystem in India, The Sandbox has already stepped into a partnership with the Okto Web3 wallet.

The metaverse market is expected to reportedly reach $800 billion (roughly Rs. 59,58,700 crore) by 2024.

“We want to build a diverse and inclusive world with no borders, bringing different regions of the world together, and with that vision in mind, a year ago, we started out in India to establish a joint venture,” Borget noted.

Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024 Event Teaser, Galaxy S24 Renders Surface Online

Samsung is expected to hold the next Galaxy Unpacked event in the first half of next year and we're already pretty certain that we will see the debut of the Galaxy S24 series during the event. All three models of the lineup have leaked in thorough detail for a few months, but the South Korean company haven't confirmed an exact date for the event. A new leak now suggests Samsung could hold the Unpacked event on January 18 to announce its next Galaxy S series. If this rumour turns out to be true, this will be a little earlier than the usual launch date of the Galaxy S series phones. Samsung's first Galaxy Unpacked event normally takes place in February. Separately, alleged renders of the vanilla Galaxy S24 have leaked on the Web.

Tipster Evan Blass (@evleaks), via his X (formerly Twitter) account, posted an alleged promotional teaser of the Galaxy Unpacked 2024 event that suggests the event date and time. According to the poster, the Galaxy Unpacked 2024 will be held on January 18 at 1:00 AM KST (11:30 PM IST). The teaser has a tagline: “Galaxy AI is coming” in a moving font, indicating integrated features on the lineup powered by artificial intelligence. There is no confirmation from Samsung about the Galaxy Unpacked 2024 event date yet, but the new leak is in line with previously tipped schedules.

Additionally, new renders offering a glimpse into the possible design and colour options of the Galaxy S24 have leaked online. The renders shared by Android Headlines indicate four different colour options with marketing names— amber yellow, marble gray, cobalt violet, and onyx black. Further, the handset will be reportedly offered in blue, green, and orange colours exclusively via Samsung's official website.

The renders suggest a flat screen for the Galaxy S24 with symmetrical bezels, centrally located hole punch cutout, and rounded corners. They indicate a flat metal frame for the handset with integrated antenna lines. On the rear, it is seen with triple rear cameras. Just like the Galaxy S23, the camera rings for the three sensors are individually protruded out of the back panel in a vertical array

Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S24 series of smartphones will most likely share a similar design to its predecessor, but may offer integrated AI features and minor changes in design. The flagship lineup is expected to include the vanilla Samsung Galaxy S24, the Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra. They are expected to pack the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC and Exynos 2400 SoC under the hood, based on the region they will launch in.

Shiba Inu Holders to Get ‘.SHIB’ Domain that Would Function on Web2.0, Web3

The developers behind the popular memecoin Shiba Inu have decided to bring a new offering to its investor community. The Shiba Inu team has applied to acquire the ‘.shib' domain, which if approved, would let members of its community create email addresses with the ‘.shib' suffix. This top-level domain (TLD) will work natively with Web3 elements like crypto wallets and be compatible with traditional email applications.

Presently, the Web3 domains that are in circulation like .crypto and .eth do not work natively with critical internet tools like web browsers and email. This is because they do not operate on the traditional Web2 Domain Name System (DNS).

The Shib team has partnered with D3, which is an Internet domain firm, in order to provide these ‘.shib' usernames to its community members. D3, founded in 2023, aims to create the next generation of domains that would be interoperable between Web2 and Web3.

The domain startup posted an official update about its partnership with Shib on its X handle.

As part of the process that entails Shib's application for this new domain, D3 will first seek approval from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) — a US-based non-profit organisation that creates and enforces policy on the internet's identifiers.

If things go well, Shib developers will offer ‘name tokens' based on .shib that would eliminate the need for its community to create long, alphanumeric crypto wallet addresses to juggle assets among multiple blockchains.

As of now, the development has not ushered any significant change in its pricing. At the time of writing, the value of Shiba Inu stood at $0.000010 (roughly Rs. 0.000850).

In recent times, crypto-related domain names have come to garner major popularity around the world. Last year, authorities in the UAE announced that women entrepreneurs aiming to experiment in the Web3 arena could apply for a free domain name.

In June 2022, crypto exchange firm Blockchain.com decided to list 86 million ‘.blockchain' domain names for up for grabs for free, supported by Unstoppable Domains.

iQoo Neo 9 Pro Tipped to Launch in India in January; May Come With Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC

iQoo Neo 9 Pro may launch in India soon. It is confirmed to debut in China alongside the iQoo Neo 9 on December 27. The company has been teasing the iQoo Neo 9 series for a few weeks now. Recently, they also released a teaser video that confirmed some key specifications of the handset. Other than official announcements, details about the upcoming handsets have also been leaked online. Meanwhile, a tipster has suggested the India launch details of the iQoo Neo 9 Pro model.

Tipster Mukul Sharma (@stufflistings) suggested in a post on X that the iQoo Neo 9 Pro model will launch in India in January 2024. The Indian variant is likely to be similar to its Chinese counterpart in most ways. It is even tipped to come with the dual-tone red and white colour option that has been spotted on most promotional images of the phone. However, the tipster claims that the Indian variant of the iQoo Neo 9 Pro will carry a Snapdragon Gen 2 SoC instead of the MediaTek Dimensity 9300 chipset that the Chinese version is confirmed to carry.

Previously, the company confirmed in a teaser that the iQoo Neo 9 and iQoo Neo 9 Pro will launch with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and the MediaTek Dimensity 9300 SoCs, respectively. iQoo also revealed that the two upcoming smartphones will be offered in Nautical Blue, Fighting Black, and Red and White Soul (translated from Chinese) colour options, the last of which comes with a dual-tone finish as the name suggests.

The complete list of specifications of the iQoo Neo 9 Pro has been tipped previously. The handset is said to sport a 6.78-inch 1.5K OLED display with a refresh rate of 144Hz. It is expected to ship with Android 14-based OriginOS 4. The phone is expected to feature a dual rear camera system with a 50-megapixel Sony IMX920 primary sensor and another 50-megapixel secondary sensor. A 16-megapixel front camera is said to placed in a centred hole-punch slot at the top of the front panel.

Details about the battery capacity of the iQoo Neo 9 Pro is not known at the moment, but it is tipped to support 120W wired fast charging. For security, it is also said to be equipped with an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Samsung Galaxy A55 runs Geekbench with Exynos 1480 SoC, Xclipse 530 GPU confirmed

Last week we saw a Geekbench run from the Galaxy A55's SoC, but it wasn't in the Galaxy A55 - it was using some kind of test platform. Today, that changes, as a prototype of the A55 itself has also made it onto Geekbench, and this confirms the interesting GPU choice Samsung's made. The A55's chipset is widely believed to be marketed as Exynos 1480, following, of course, in the footsteps of the 1380 seen in the A54 and the 1280 in the A53. Unlike those, however, the new one won't use a Mali GPU, instead opting for an AMD RDNA2-based Xclipse 530 GPU, which has been confirmed by today's...
