Samsung Galaxy S24+ in for review

We finally managed to get our hands on the new Galaxy S24+ and have brought it straight in for review. Samsung packages just a USB-C cable with its Galaxy phones but some retailers will offer Samsung's new, rather tiny 25W adapter. Not everyone offers this deal, but Samsung does give you a free upgrade from 256GB to 512GB during the pre-order period, as well as trade-in bonuses and discounts on Samsung services. Unboxing the Galaxy S24+ The Galaxy S24+ feels like a completely new device - something we couldn't have imagined saying a few weeks ago. For one, it's fully matte on...

Netflix co-CEO says it's not worth launching an app for the Apple Vision Pro yet

Pre-orders for the Apple Vision Pro started off last week and a few days ago analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Apple has sold between 160,000 and 180,000 units. However, the proud new owners of Apple’s spatial computer won’t be using them to watch Netflix. Netflix Co-CEO Greg Peters was interviewed by Stratechery and was there is no Netflix app on the Vision Pro. Long story short, it’s not worth it – there aren’t enough potential subscribers that own the headset relative to the amount of effort it would take to port the streaming app to the platform. That is not to say that there will...

Apple opens up iOS to alternative app stores in the EU

Forced by the EU's Digital Markets Act, Apple has today announced that it's making big changes to iOS, the App Store, and how browsers work on the platform. These changes will become available in the EU with the iOS 17.4 release which is scheduled to land in March. Let's start with browsing. Even today you can select a default browser that isn't Safari, but any browser that isn't Safari has to use Safari's WebKit rendering engine. That will change, every browser can use whatever engine it wants. Additionally, after EU iPhone owners install iOS 17.4, the first time they go into Safari they...

So, you can purchase a Google Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro in the new color called Mint, exclusively from the Google online store and Google Fi in the US. Google Pixel 9 Leaked Images Suggest iPhone 15-Like Flat Edges, Triple Rear Cameras

Google Pixel 8 is still new in the market, but early renders of the Pixel 9 have already started emerging on the Web, giving us a look at what the company's next flagship smartphone could look like. The renders show the handset in a blue shade and suggest three cameras on the rear. This would be a significant update for the vanilla model. It looks like Google may have redesigned the rear camera module. The images indicate flat edges on the Pixel 9, similar to what we saw on the Pixel 9 Pro. It also has a hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera on the display.

After posting CAD-based renders of the Google Pixel 9 Pro, tipster Steve H.McFly (@OnLeaks), has leaked renders and specifications of the Google Pixel 9 in association with 91Mobiles. The renders suggest a compact design for the handset with flattened sides, resembling the latest iPhone 15 series. The phone appears to get a redesigned rear camera module housing three sensors and an LED flash. This would be a huge upgrade for the vanilla Pixel as the previous Pixel 6, Pixel 7, and Pixel 8 only got dual rear cameras.

Instead of extending the camera bar across the entire width of the back panel as seen on the current Pixel 8 and older models, the Pixel 9 appears to have an oval-shaped island similar to the Pixel Fold. The camera unit appears to include a new periscope telephoto lens. Specification-wise, this update would bring the regular Pixel handset much more in tune with the Pro model.

The Pixel 9 is seen in a blue colour in the leaked images. The handset could be offered in multiple colour options during the launch. Further, the screen has a centrally located single hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera.

Google's Pixel 9 is said to measure 152.8x71.9x8.5mm. It is expected to sport a 6.1-inch screen, down from the Pixel 8's 6.2-inch screen.

Google is expected to announce the Pixel 9 series in October. The handset could run on Android 15 and the company's in-house Tensor G4 SoC.

This year, the company is going to supercharge its apps, services, and Android operating system with AI technology. We discuss this and more on Orbital, the Gadgets 360 podcast. Nokia G42 gets Android 14 in India

As we mentioned when we discussed Motorola's intentions regarding updates to Android 14, we'll say it again - there are some Android device makers who are very good at issuing updates (Google and Samsung come to mind), and there are some like Motorola and HMD Global. The latter has finally started pushing Android 14 today to the Nokia G42, which was announced last June. This is the first HMD device to receive the new OS version launched by Google many months ago, and hopefully it won't be the last - although HMD hasn't yet published a list of eligible phones. Google Pixel 9 leaks in renders showing three rear cameras, flat sides

Mere hours ago some CAD-based renders of the upcoming Google Pixel 9 Pro were outed, and now it's time for its smaller and more affordable sibling to get the exact same treatment. Ladies and gentlemen, meet the Google Pixel 9. Right off the bat, one thing clearly stands out. Unlike the Pixel 8, the Pixel 9 has three cameras on the rear, one of which obviously has a periscope zoom lens. This is a huge update for the 'vanilla' Pixel line, and one that brings it much more in tune with the Pro, spec-wise. Moving on, the other obvious thing is that Google has also been infested by the...

Google Pixel 9 Pro Design Renders Leak; Suggests Flat Edges, Redesigned Camera Bar

Google Pixel 8 series with the vanilla Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro was launched in October at the ‘Made by Google' event. Now, the first Pixel 9 Pro renders have emerged online offering a glimpse into the possible design of Google's next flagship. The renders suggest a design deviation from the past few generations. The Pixel 9 Pro seems to have flat edges similar to what we've seen on iPhone models and a redesigned camera bar.

Prominent leaker Steve H.McFly (@OnLeaks), in collaboration with MySmartPrice, has shared alleged renders and specifications of Google Pixel 9 Pro. The handset appears to have flat edges resembling iPhone models. The camera bar seems to have undergone a design change in the upcoming handset as it does not appear integrated into the frame. The pill-shaped camera island is not connected to the edges of the device, deviating from the previous design language of the Pixel Pro models. It looks more like the camera bar from the Pixel Fold. Three cameras are placed side-by-side and covered by glass. Google's temperature sensor appears to make a return with the upcoming phone.

The front of the Pixel 9 Pro draws similarities to the Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 series, with a hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera and narrow bezels. The power button and volume rockers are seen on the right side of the phone. The left side seems to have antenna markings. The USB Type-C port, speaker grille, and SIM card tray are seen to be housed at the bottom of the handset. Google seems to have changed the arrangement of the SIM card tray. In the Pixel 8 Pro, the SIM tray is placed on the left spine. The mmWave antenna cover and a microphone appear to be present on the top of the phone.

Google's upcoming Pixel 9 Pro is said to feature a 6.5-inch display and could measure 162.7x76.6x8.5mm. By comparison, the Pixel 8 Pro measures 162.6x76.5x8.8mm and features a 6.7-inch display.

Google is expected to announce the Pixel 9 series in October. The handset could ship with Android 15 and the company's in-house Tensor G4 SoC. We can expect more leaks in the coming days.

Asus Zenfone 11 shows up in the Google Play Console with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

Last year there was a rumor going round, saying that Asus would discontinue the Zenfone line and thus the Zenfone 10 would be the last of the diminutive flagships in the company's roster. Thankfully for those who are into smaller phones, Asus itself quickly denied the rumor, and that was that. Now, the Google Play Console comes to further prove the point that Asus has not given up on the Zenfones, by listing the upcoming Zenfone 11. The Zenfone 10 was announced in June 2023 and released the following month, so we're probably still quite far removed from the official introduction of...

Samsung is thinking about making a cheaper Galaxy Z Fold6

According to a new rumor out of its home market of Korea, Samsung is considering releasing a cheaper version of the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold6. This isn't to say the Fold6 itself will be cheaper - but it might be joined by a cheaper option. This is the first time Samsung has ever considered developing a lower-cost foldable, the source of this rumor says. Interestingly, the reason for choosing the Fold line for this move and not the Flip is that the Flips that have launched so far are selling much more. So with a cheaper Fold, the Fold line could be reinvigorated. Samsung Galaxy Z...

Weekly poll results: Asus ROG Phone 8/8 Pro attract attention, but could do with a price cut

The last page of our Asus ROG Phone 8/8 Pro review begins with “The ROG Phone is not a cheap device.” And we’re not the only ones that feel that way, in fact, it was the common sentiment in last week’s poll. Our review ends on a positive note and we found that Asus succeeded in its quest to make the ROG Phone 8 models more appealing to mainstream consumers. Many still see it as a gaming phone and aren’t interested in it, but maybe they will reconsider. As for others, a hotly debated topic in the comments was the switch to a punch hole camera. This would make the OnePlus Watch 2 very different from the original OnePlus Watch, which launched back in 2021 and ran a proprietary OS. Xiaomi took the plunge into...

Google teases new Minty Fresh colorway for the Pixel 8 Pro

Google's online store is now teasing a new drop. It's not a new device, mind you, just a new color for the Pixel 8 Pro. Xiaomi Mix Flip gets certified in China with support for satellite connectivity

Back in September of last year we first heard that Xiaomi was working on a flip-style foldable to complement the Mix Fold line in its portfolio. This was to be called Xiaomi Mix Flip, and it was rumored to arrive alongside the Mix Fold 4 at some point later this year. Today, the Mix Flip has been certified in China by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. The certification reveals what might be a surprising fact: the Mix Flip will have support for satellite connectivity. The fact that it's going to be running Android is also confirmed, as is its 5G support, but...

Samsung Galaxy AI is coming to these older devices

Yesterday, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra - all three models bursting at the seams with AI. Galaxy AI, in fact. So, if you have an older Samsung, you may be wondering whether your device will at some point get some of those AI features. Good news: the answer is yes. "Many" of them, according to Samsung itself. The models that will, at least initially, get these AI features, are the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+,...

HarmonyOS Next gets closer to prime time, video shows off the new UI design language

HarmonyOS Next is getting closer to release – Huawei just posted an introduction video that highlights some of the changes to the UI design language. It’s trying to break away from the drab flat design and add back dimensionality with concepts like “Spatial,” “Vivid Color” and “Immersive.” This version of HarmonyOS is dubbed “Star River” edition, although some online translation services render the name as “Galaxy” edition. We’ll stick with “Star River” to avoid confusion. HarmonyOS Next will drop Android support in China, so local developers are busy porting over their apps to...

Samsung Galaxy S24+ gets QHD+ display and 12GB of RAM, S24 tags along with 7 years of support

Realme Note 50 Live Images, Key Specifications Surface Online; Tipped to Launch on January 24

Realme has announced that it will soon unveil the Realme Note series of smartphones. The company has not yet confirmed the name of any model but has officially teased the launch date of the first Realme Note phone. Details about a rumoured Redmi Note 1 recently surfaced online suggesting that the handset will launch sometime later this month. There have been leaks saying that a phone with the moniker Realme Note 50 could be the first model in the new upcoming Note series. Now, several leaks hint at key specifications, colour options and design of this purported handset.

In a Facebook post, Realme Philippines shared a teaser for the first Realme Note handset. It showed the back panel of the upcoming model briefly in a black colour option and confirmed its launch on January 24. The company, however, has yet to confirm the model name or any other details about this handset.

Tipster Paras Guglani (@passionategeekz) has shared a leaked poster for the Realme Note 50 that is tipped to launch on January 24. He said that the phone will launch globally in black and blue colourways. He claims that it will be a rebranded version of a Realme C-series model and is likely to be a budget offering.

The details seen in the leaked poster suggest that the Realme Note 50 will feature a 6.7-inch HD+ display with a refresh rate of 90Hz and carry TUV Rheinland certification. It is likely to come with a thickness of 7.9mm and an IP54 rating for dust and water resistance.

Simultaneously there have been live images of the Realme Note 50 that have surfaced online, mainly from accounts of content creators from the Philippines. It shows the rear panel of the phone with a glossy finish, similar to the Sunny Oasis design we have seen in the Realme C67 models. The dual rear camera setup of the phone appear as individual circular units alongside an LED flash also housed in a circular unit on the top left corner of the panel. Meanwhile, in an unboxing video posted by Instagram user Superbdan (@superbdan), we also see the handset in a blue shade.

The images and videos of the Realme Note 50 also show that the model is equipped with a USB Type-C port and a 3.5mm audio jack on the bottom, while the power and volume buttons are seen on the right edge. The screen is seen with thin side bezels, a centred waterdrop notch for the front camera, and a relatively thicker chin.

IDC confirms: Apple was king of the smartphone market in 2023, overtaking Samsung

The last time Samsung wasn't No.1 in smartphone sales in any given year was all the way back in 2010. And yet - it's finally happened again. According to IDC estimates, the Cupertino company shipped 234.6 million smartphones last year, for a market share of 20.1%, while Samsung only managed 226.6 million shipments taking 19.4% of the pie. In third was Xiaomi with 145.9 million units...

Mercedes-Benz Boasts of In-Car NFT Gallery as Part of MB.OS Revamp

Mercedes, the German luxury carmaker has decided to express its stance on the controversial Web3 sector, in a rather bold and artistic way. In a revamp to its operating system, Mercedes-Benz has decided to include a digital gallery, showing off non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Built on blockchains, NFTs are digital collectibles that hold underlaying values, which makes them a lucrative investment item for members of the Web3 community. NFTs could be inspired by artworks, cartoons, game characters, or even imaginary elements.

During its recent presentation at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, the German automaker showcased its next-generation Mercedez-Benz Operating System (MB.OS) that brings changes to its in-car entertainment provisions, Decrypt reported.

As part of these tweaks to its OS, the dashboard of Mercedes-Benz now features a new app called ‘MBUX Collectibles'. Through this app, users of these cars will be able to browse through NFTs linked to the brand. Last year, the car company had dropped its second NXT Icons NFT collection. The 18,860 digital that are collectibles part of this collection, for instance, will be shown as part of the car's NFT gallery.

The first ever NFT collection from Mercedes-Benz debuted in April last year, and it was named ‘Maschine'. NFTs from this series will also be featured in the revamped dashboard. Hoping to connect with a younger generation of customers, the German luxury car brand has been trying to establish itself as a pro-Web3 brand for a while now.

Apart from NFTs, Mercedes-Benz had inked a sponsorship deal with the FTX crypto exchange in September 2021. The partnership automatically fell apart after the FTX exchange collapsed last year and ended up filing for bankruptcy. Not just NFTs and crypto exchanges – the company has also taken into conscience, the use of blockchain in its operations. In 2020, the company piloted a blockchain project to track the amount of CO2 emissions triggered by its cobalt supply chain.

Weekly poll: can the Asus ROG Phone 8 find a place in your pocket?

The new Asus ROG Phone 8 is very much still a gaming phone, but this time around Asus designed it with everyday usability in mind. It’s smaller and lighter than before and has a proper IP68 dust and water resistance rating (vs. IP54 on last year’s model). Bigger changes include a 32MP 3x telephoto camera and improved stabilization for the main cam (Hybrid Gimbal Stabilizer 3.0). There is now wireless charging too (15W), though the battery capacity was reduced slightly (at 5,500mAh it’s not small by any means). As a gaming phone, it will make use of the new variable refresh rate...
