Hyundai Grand i10 Nios to get 100hp, 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine

Did the Europe-spec Hyundai i10 N Line, revealed at the 2019 Frankfurt motor show, strike a chord with you? If so, then there’s some good news coming your way. Hyundai will introduce a more powerful version of the Grand i10 Nios in India, in early 2020. The sportier version will be powered by the Venue’s 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol unit, albeit in a lower 100hp state of tune. The power figure marks a significant jump over the Nios’ existing 1.2-litre, four-cylinder engine’s 83hp. To keep pricing in check, Hyundai will not offer the Venue’s 7-speed dual-clutch auto transmission on this version of the Nios. A 5-speed manual gearbox will be the sole gearbox on offer.

The more powerful Nios will likely sport an all-black interior theme with contrast stitching and could get bespoke alloy wheels too, but the car is unlikely to get the full N Line treatment. ‘N’ is Hyundai’s performance arm and the carmaker has been studying the possibility of bringing its N cars to India as well. However, this more powerful Nios will not be badged as an N car in our market.

The sportier Nios will go one-up on like-sized petrol rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Swift (83hp) and Ford Figo (96hp), in terms of power. However, Tata’s souped-up Tiago JTP will still have the edge, with 114hp on call.

Expect the sportier Hyundai Grand i10 Nios to be priced at about Rs 8 lakh (estimated, ex-showroom).
