2020 Hyundai Creta previewed in official sketches ahead of Expo debut

For years, the Hyundai Creta has enjoyed a largely unchallenged run in India’s midsize SUV market, but its cousin, the Kia Seltos, has turned up the heat in the segment. Now, it’s time for the all-new Hyundai Creta to make its presence felt, and the second generation of the hugely popular SUV has now been previewed in official sketches ahead of its debut at Auto Expo 2020.

As is evident in the sketches, the new Hyundai Creta is based on the second-gen ix25 revealed in China last year. It, by and large, looks the same, save for a different grille (more like the Hyundai Venue's) and a different design for the alloy wheels. Unsurprisingly, the new Creta retains the split head- and tail-light setups, as well as the squarish wheel arches of the ix25.

What will be shown on February 6, 2020 at the Auto Expo is only the exterior design of the 2020 Hyundai Creta, with the interior being blacked-out, similar to what the company did with the reveal of the Aura compact sedan. The new Creta's interior and more details about the second-gen SUV will be released closer to its market launch, which we can also confirm is slated for mid-March 2020.

On the inside, the new Hyundai Creta is expected to get the large panoramic sunroof and the 10.25-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen infotainment system as seen on the ix25.

In terms of powertrains, the all-new Hyundai Creta will borrow its engines and gearboxes from the hugely popular Kia Seltos and could also get the Seltos GT Line's 1.4-litre turbo-petrol option.

Armed to the teeth with features, along with an attractive price tag (Rs 10-16 lakh, estimated, ex-showroom), the second-gen Hyundai Creta will have the goods to take the fight to its rivals.

What do you think of the India-spec Hyundai Creta's design? Let us know in the comments.

Samsung trademarks "UTG", could mean Ultra Thin Glass for Z Flip and future Samsung foldables

Foldable smartphones are certainly gaining a lot of attention as the new form factor challenges smartphone design as we know it. While we saw foldable smartphones and displays over the last year or so, they were all made with fragile plastic lenses atop the display panels. These are very easy to scratch and can easily cause damage to an otherwise expensive device. Rumors suggested that Samsung's upcoming Z Flip smartphone will use a new ultra-thin type of glass. The latest report from LetsGoDigital suggests a new patent from Samsung's lawyers submitted to the EUIPO (European Union...

First Ather Grid charge station set up in New Delhi

Ather Energy has set up its first fast-charging station, called Ather Grid, in New Delhi at Connaught Place. This is the company’s first fast-charging station outside of Bengaluru and Chennai, where it focused on selling the Ather S340 and S450 in the past two years.

On January 28, the company had unveiled its latest offering – the Ather 450X – which comes with an improved battery as well as performance, and is slated to go on sale from Q2 of FY2021. Ather will introduce the product in eight more cities in the near future.

Simultaneous launch in four new cities

Ather Energy aims to enter Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad simultaneously in July. "As of now, four more markets are confirmed outside of Bengaluru and Chennai. We are ideally going to start deliveries in all these four markets together. We will have our experience centres along with our partners as well as our charging points set up in these cities," said Tarun Mehta, co-founder and CEO, Ather Energy.

Without disclosing any booking numbers, Mehta remarked, "The number is significant. We have more pre-orders come in for the 450X in the last few weeks, than we have had in the entire year for the 450."

While work is on to identify the right partners to establish its minimalist-themed experience centres, christened 'Ather Space', the company has tied up with EESL (Energy Efficiency Services Ltd) in New Delhi to begin setting up its charging stations (Ather Grid).

The Ather Grid in Delhi, however, is the company's first-generation version. At the launch of the 450X, it had also announced a new and improved second-generation model of the fast-charging station that would offer up to 50 percent faster charging, at 1.5km of range per minute. The company might also be looking at targeting subsidies for setting up charging infrastructure, under the recently announced Delhi EV Policy.

Wild Hogs: Harley-Davidson ride to IBW 2019

It was still dark outside when we left our hotel in Khopoli. Our jury round had us there the previous evening, but the fact that we had heaps of shooting to do along the way to Goa meant the 80-odd kilometres we’d covered from Mumbai would be of little significance. Luckily, we had four of the most culturally appropriate motorcycles to help reach Goa for the 2019 India Bike Week (IBW).

Harley-Davidson has been at the helm of motorcycling culture across the world and, in more recent times, over here too. Every year, thousands of motorcyclists from across the country gather at Goa to celebrate all things two wheels at the IBW. The convergence has been dubbed ‘The Great Migration’. This year, we decided to partake in the phenomenon – and what better way to do so than on a Harley. Now, the American manufacturer has over a dozen motorcycles on sale in India, but with only four of us to ride them, we decided to take just one from each family to get as wholesome an experience as we could.

The locals were amused by how a motorcycle could be this big, loud and shiny.

As the sun came up on our little endeavour, we’d made good progress. We were riding down to Goa on some of the widest and smoothest highways at this end of the country. Granted, it may not have been the most scenic option, but the bikes we were on were conceptualised to be in their element on roads like these. A Street Rod 750, an Iron 883 from the Sportster line, the Fat Bob from the Softail series and the giant (and perfectly named) Road King from the Touring family were our steeds of choice. Each remarkably different from the other but all four instantly identifiable as Harleys.

For instance, despite being the least powerful of the lot, the Street Rod 750 held its own – its relatively less weight and shorter wheelbase made it extremely fun. Over longer stints, the unusual riding ergos do get uncomfortable and this had us wanting to switch to one of the other Harleys. The Iron 883 did provide some relief, but that’s not what you’ll remember about the bike. You will, in fact, remember the engine. The Sportster family is the last in Harley’s line-up awaiting an overhaul and so it’s no surprise that it’s the most old-school one there. This is exactly what made it such a raw experience – a large air-cooled V-twin chugging away under you, accompanied by all its sounds and vibrations. Neither of these two, however, was able to match the sheer road presence of the other Harleys.

At the end of a long day of riding, a milestone like this is quite literally a sight for sore eyes.

The Fat Bob and Road King are powered by the same Milwaukee-Eight 107 that produces an upward of 145Nm of torque, which will whip your head back if you aren’t prepared. The Road King was also the motorcycle all of us wanted to be on. The wide, plush seat and slab-like footrests were extremely tempting, but once you’re on the bike you realise that the handlebar can put some strain on the shoulders. Another reason we all wanted a go on both was because of their sheer road presence. When the bikes aren’t attracting attention thundering down the highway, their proportions and styling kept them from drowning in the sea of thousands of bikes that were headed there.

As night fell, we kept riding. It was a 15hr journey by the end of it and the joys of shooting a video were solely to thank for it. As we finally pulled up to our hotel – ears still ringing from the obnoxiously loud in-line fours that’d repeatedly scream past us, only to stop to ease their agonised wrists and backs – I took a moment to reflect. We may not have been the fastest or the loudest, but the ride was analogue, visceral and, in its own way, rewarding. We’d arrived in style, all set for the next two days.

Details of Ferrari's first EV revealed in patent sketches

Details of Ferrari’s first production-ready electric vehicle (EV), arriving by 2025, appear to have been revealed in a series of patents leaked online. Sketches and accompanying data that have surfaced on the web suggest that Maranello’s first electric car will be a low-riding GT that could rival the Porsche Taycan and upcoming Tesla Roadster.

A plan view shows the EV is likely to feature a two-seat or 2+2 layout, a long bonnet and short overhangs, much like the firm’s 812 Superfast flagship supercar.

Also shown are details of the model’s four-wheel-drive powertrain, showing that an electric motor will be mounted to each wheel, and will apparently be capable of operating independently – perhaps allowing the car to be able to rotate on the spot. Precise technical data and performance details remain unconfirmed.

A Ferrari spokesperson was unable to comment on the aforementioned patent applications.

Ferrari’s first electric car is likely to use technology taken from the new SF90, which pairs a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with a trio of electric motors for a combined 1,000hp output – making it Ferrari’s most powerful road car yet.

At the SF90’s launch last year, Ferrari CEO Louis Camilleri called it “the first step in a direction that Ferrari will enter in unwavering focus and confidence.”

In August 2019, the firm’s chief technology officer, Michael Leiters, explained to our sister publication, Autocar UK, that keeping weight down and ensuring a high top speed were priorities for any Ferrari EV. “Right now, the technology is not mature enough”, he said. “Look at customer requirements: the most important thing is sound. Today, there is also a problem on range; which, for a sportscar, really is a problem – the range of an electric car is especially so if you accelerate or go with high speed.”

Closer to home, Ferrari is slated to launch the 720hp, twin-turbo V8 equipped F8 Tributo in India by March at a price of Rs 4.02 crore (expected, ex-showroom, India).

Over a year and a half ago, each of the four major US carriers was in some way involved with an incident that revealed how carriers were selling location data of its subscribers to whoever wanted to pay for them. It eventually involved Securus, a prison company that used carrier information to track phones without owners' permission. Lexus LC500h launched at Rs 1.96 crore

Lexus has launched its two-door grand tourer, the LC500h, in India at Rs 1.96crore (ex-showroom). This niche model joins Lexus’ India line-up, which currently includes the ES and LS sedans and the NX, RX and LX SUVs.

Powering the LC500h is a 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine that puts out 300hp and 348Nm of torque. It works in conjunction with an 180hp electric motor. The total system output of 354hp is sent to the rear wheels via a clever gearbox that combines a 4-speed automatic with a CVT. When used in manual mode, this allows the driver to choose from a total of 10 ‘gears’. The Lexus LC500h does 0-100kph in a claimed 4.7 secs. In international markets the LC is also offered with a 477hp, 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine option.

The LC500h gets features like a 10.3-inch infotainment system that’s controlled by a touchpad next to the gear lever, a digital instrument cluster, automatic climate control and a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. As is standard for cars of this ilk, customisation and personalisation options are extensive and can drive the price up significantly.

Deliveries for the grand tourer are slated to begin in March. Lexus is bringing the LC500h down to India via the CBU route under the new 2,500-car import rule. In our country, the Lexus LC500h competes with the Jaguar F-Type V8 (Rs 2.21-2.80 crore), Bentley Continental and Mercedes-AMG GT (Rs 2.27-2.32 crore).

MG sedan for India in the works

MG Motor is expanding its horizons in India. While SUVs may be its mainstay today, cars of other shapes and sizes are also high on its priority list. This is why, apart from the Vision-i MPV concept that’s likely to be the star of the 2020 Auto Expo stall, MG will also showcase a large sedan. Based on the RC-6 from Shanghai Automotive (SAIC)-owned Baojun, the car is actually a cross between a coupé, off-roader and a sedan. Unconventional to say the least, the car features a flowing coupé-like roof, a near 180mm ground clearance, and the basic three-box layout of a sedan. While the proportions may take some getting accustomed to, the skinning and detailing are crisp, clean and attractive. The large wraparound grille forms the focus of the design, and what helps it stand out is the fact that the car has a long nose and flat bonnet. As on the Hector, it gets attractive fighter-jet-like faux intakes surrounding the fog lights, a clamshell bonnet, and, around the rear, the styling is neat, clean and quite Renault-like too. Interestingly, no attempt has been made to hide the high ground clearance though. Quite the reverse; the designers have actually worked to enhance it by using blackened running boards (between the front and rear wheels), and a darkened rear valance.

Stance has crossover written all over it; note blacked-out running board.

With its massive 2,800mm wheelbase – incidentally, 41mm short of the Skoda Superb – there’s likely to be plenty of space and comfort on the inside, and as on other China-market-specific cars, there will be a strong focus on the rear seat. Technology will be in sharp focus as well. The car is likely to get a Mercedes S-class-like twin- screen display, in place of the instrument panel, with both located in the same plane. A high-quality cabin with plenty of connected car tech is likely to be part of the package too. The engine, according to sources, will be shared with the Hector, especially the petrol 1.5 turbo that puts out 143hp, and there could be a diesel version too, with SAIC’s own 2.0 diesel expected to see the light of day in the next couple of years.

Twin screens merge to form one continuous panel; nice.

Expected to reach showrooms only in 2021, MG is likely to price the car aggressively and load it to the gills with both, comfort-oriented features and plenty of tech. But how will Indian car buyers respond to its unconventional proportions? And how much will they be willing to pay for it in this more brand-sensitive neck of the woods? This is why MG plans to showcase the car at the upcoming Auto Expo in Greater Noida this month, where it hopes to get plenty of feedback from prospective customers and showgoers in general. It could be the start of something big for the Chinese-owned British brand.

Norton Motorcycles faces financial trouble

Norton Motorcycles is said to have been placed in administration. A company goes into administration when it becomes insolvent, and is put under the management of Licensed Insolvency Practitioners. The British motorcycle brand appears to have failed to secure the backing it needs to continue trading. It’s being said that investment in the development of the Norton V4 SS and RR models has proved to be quite expensive for the company.

Insufficient cash flow is said to be the reason why the company is having trouble fulfilling their order book. While the limited-edition V4 SS sold out rapidly despite the £44,000 (Rs 40.88 lakh) asking price, the funding required to source parts and build these high-end motorcycles at the company’s Donington Hall factory wasn’t there.

Norton had also invested money into new mid-capacity, parallel-twin models called the Atlas Nomad and Ranger. These models were going to be high volume products for the company but Norton hasn’t managed to finish the expanded space in the factory that was needed for their production.

Review: Kawasaki Ninja 300 long term review, first report

“Don’t!” “There are better options.” “It’s so old.”– this is advice from my colleagues in the Autocar India bike team that I completely ignored when I bought the Ninja 300. And, after a year of riding, I still stand by my decision. However, contrary to my hopes and dreams of going on long rides and solo trips, I have just been using it for my daily commute to work. That also means the odometer reads like a rare hypercar’s, with only 4,780km on it, and three service boxes ticked already.

Some spare parts are still very expensive.

Speaking of which, a basic service every 6 months/6,000km will cost between Rs 2,000-3,000 – which is not bad, but certainly not as cheap as your average motorcycle. A major one – when you need to change fluids and filters – will cost almost double.

Twin-cylinder engine is very refined. Exhaust sounds sweet.

Running costs too aren’t exactly cheap either because the best I managed is around 22-25kpl in the city with moderate traffic. That said, I only tank up with premium fuel, like ‘Power’ or ‘XtraPremium’, as it makes a noticeable difference almost immediately – the engine runs smoother, performance improves and there is also a slight bump in efficiency. Coming to spare parts, some of them are still pricey despite the huge price cut. I, unfortunately, found that out the hard way when a kid with a sharp stone, (and the vision to be the next Rembrandt) painted a gut-wrenching scratch on one of the Ninja’s headlight clusters. The fix? Replacing the entire twin-pod headlight assembly at a cost of Rs 20,000.

Instrument console looks dated. Also miss gear position indicator.

However, despite all that, I never regretted buying the Ninja. Yes, there are more modern, faster and more efficient bikes on sale. But the Ninja is in a sweet spot of its own. For example, despite the stance of a back-breaker track bike, I find the riding position comfortable because the seat height, and the handle and foot-peg placement are perfectly suited for guys over 6ft in height.

Suspension soaks up potholes and speed breakers with ease.

Next, you have that butter-smooth, parallel-twin engine, which is linear and docile in the initial part of the rev range and then manic after you pass 9,000rpm. Also, the light clutch and well-calibrated gearing allow you to amble around at city speeds in third gear and still have enough grunt to pull away hard when needed. I don’t want to sound like a paid promotion, but I just cannot think of any other bike that can switch its character so effortlessly. It’s this duality that drew me to the Ninja in the first place, and it still continues to plaster a smile on my face.

As far as my dream of long rides and solo trips goes, I will make sure to go on at least three long rides in this new year and test the credibility of the “incredible” cruising manners that every Ninja owner I meet, swears by.

Nokia 9.2 might have under-display camera

HMD Global has postponed the launch of the next Nokia flagship smartphone in order to give it a better chance at competing in the 2020 market, according to recent reports. This means it will only be out sometime during the fall, which gives the company plenty of time to switch to the Snapdragon 865 chipset, which all of its competitors will be using anyway. This delay may also give HMD enough time to pull a first in the mobile world: an under-display selfie camera. Apparently this is now in testing for the Nokia 9.2, according to a source that's been reliable at times in the...

CFMoto 300SR patent images surface

CFMoto has been working on making a production version of its SR supersport concept, and now, design patents and some specifications of the SR models have surfaced. The patent images reveal almost everything about the design, and the technical details give us an idea what these motorcycles could perform like.

According to the source, CFMoto has gained European type-approval for two versions of the motorcycle – one will be a 249cc 250SR, and the other, a slightly larger 292cc 300SR. The engines and frames on each of these models are expected to be similar to the ones on the company’s naked 250NK and 300NK.

Documents have also revealed that the difference in power figures won’t be that large and the lower-capacity 250SR is expected to make 27.5hp while the 300SR will produce at 29hp. However, the 300SR makes its peak power at only 8,750rpm, while the 250SR produces it at 10,000rpm.

Going by these leaked details, it looks like CFMoto has the SR close to being production-ready and we expect to see them go on sale in global markets sometime this year. There’s no news of the SR making it to India as of now.

Toyota Fortuner BS6 production commences

Toyota has announced the start of production of the BS6-compliant Fortuner at its manufacturing facilities in Badadi, Karnataka. The updated model is expected to hit showroom floors in the coming weeks, with bookings already underway at authorised dealerships for a token amount of Rs 50,000.

The rugged SUV will continue with its current range of petrol and diesel powertrains, albeit upgraded with cleaner technology to reduce emissions. In BS4 guise, the 2.7-litre petrol puts out 166hp and 245Nm of torque and the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel 177hp and 420Nm (manual)/450Nm (automatic) of torque. Though these figures are expected to be unchanged when the engines get updates, the effect on fuel economy remains to be seen.

There will be no changes in transmission options as well. Both engines will get the option of a 5-speed manual (petrol)/6-speed manual gearbox (diesel), and a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission. A rear-wheel-drive setup will be standard, with the diesel also extending the option of a four-wheel drive system.

No changes are expected in the features list, with seven airbags, ABS, brake assist, vehicle stability control, traction control, hill assist and hill descent control (4WD only) being standard. In terms of creature comforts, the 7-seat SUV will continue to sport leatherette upholstery, power-adjustable driver and front passenger seats, auto climate control, auto-dimming internal rear-view mirror, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system and keyless entry/go.

With the Fortuner production making the switch to BS6, Toyota’s plant has completed its transition to being a 100 percent BS6 manufacturing facility and all vehicles rolling off its production line now are compliant with the new emission norms. Launched in June last year, the Glanza premium hatchback (manufactured by Suzuki in Gujarat) was BS6 compliant from the outset. Toyota updated the Yaris midsize sedan to BS6 in December 2019, and the popular Innova Crysta MPV received the upgrade just earlier this month.

The company has clarified that deliveries of its BS6 diesel vehicles will begin in a phased manner, according to the availability of BS6 fuel. Currently, only a handful of cities like Delhi-NCR receive a supply of the cleaner fuel, with widespread availability only expected by end-March. Though operating a BS6 engine on BS4 fuel doesn’t present a big challenge for petrol mills, this is not the case with diesel engines. To better understand the switch to BS6 technology, click here.

Notably, the end of BS4 vehicle production at Toyota’s plant also signifies the end of the road for the Etios Liva hatchback, Etios sedan and the Corolla Altis executive sedan in our market. Owing to low volumes, the Japanese automaker has decided against making significant investments in upgrading these models to meet the BS6 norms.

Select Maruti Suzuki car prices hiked by up to 4.7 percent

Maruti Suzuki has officially increased prices of select models that retail from both, its Arena and Nexa outlets, citing an increase in input costs. While the exact hike for each model is yet unknown, prices for cars like the Alto, S-Presso, Wagon R, Swift and Ertiga (all sold via Maruti’s Arena showrooms), along with the a few of the brand's Nexa models - like the Baleno and XL6 - have increased by up to 4.7 percent. The price hike, which came into effect on January 27, 2020, seems to be restricted to models that have already been upgraded to meet BS6 norms.

2020 will be an interesting year for the Japanese carmaker – it’s got a 17-car strong line-up at the upcoming Auto Expo and is stepping into the BS6 era as a petrol-only brand. Though diesels may come back to Maruti’s line-up, in the short term, the company will have a heavier focus on CNG vehicles and the electrification of its range on sale in India.

In terms of gearbox options, the 1.0-litre engine is available with both, a 5-speed AMT automatic unit and a 5-speed manual. The 0.8-litre petrol engine, however, is only available with the latter.

No changes have been made to either the design of the hatchback or the equipment list. Renault offers a driver airbag, ABS, EBD, rear sensors, seatbelt reminder and a speed-alert system as standard. The top-spec Kwid continues to get 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, rear parking camera, a rear seat armrest and more.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno RS discontinued

With just a few months left for mandatory BS6 regulations to kick in, Maruti Suzuki has pulled the plug on the Baleno RS. The souped-up hatchback has been discontinued in its BS4 avatar and owing to limited success, the model is unlikely to see a BS6 upgrade.

The Baleno RS was first introduced as a sporty iteration of the premium hatch in early 2017. It packed in a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder, turbo-petrol unit from the carmaker’s Boosterjet family of engines and was tuned to produce 102hp and 150Nm of torque. The step-up in performance over the 83hp, 1.2-litre petrol and 90hp, 1.2-litre petrol mild-hybrid engines of the standard Baleno meant that the RS could complete the sprint from 0-100kph in just over 10sec. However, the added oomph did translate into slightly lower fuel economy figures. The hot hatch came with a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard.

In terms of design, the RS closely resembled the standard hatchback, save for the mesh front grille, reworked front and rear bumpers, restyled alloy wheels and all-black fabric upholstery. It was available in a single, fully-loaded trim that matched the top-spec Baleno Alpha in equipment levels. As such, it featured dual front airbags, ABS, Isofix child seat mounts, rear parking sensors and camera, 7.0-inch touchscreen with smartphone connectivity, automatic air conditioning and auto LED projector headlamps with DRLs.

The sporty Baleno received a mild facelift in early 2019 and was priced at Rs 8.89 lakh. However, low sales compelled the company to slash prices to Rs 7.89 lakh in the subsequent months, which reduced the price increment over the range-topping Alpha petrol-manual to just Rs 31,000. Maruti was further offering discounts of up to Rs 75,000 to clear stocks of the Baleno RS in December last year.

In a fate similar to the RS’ engine, the 75hp, 1.3-litre diesel engine of the standard Baleno is also slated to get axed from the line-up in the near future, following Maruti Suzuki’s decision to exit the diesel market completely. That will leave the premium hatch with just the pair of 1.2-litre petrol engines that have been BS6-compliant since April last year.

This also marks Maruti’s exit from the small turbo-petrol engine category, with the automaker finding it a challenge to market them in India.

BS6 Renault Triber launched at Rs 4.99 lakh

The Renault Triber has just been updated to meet the stricter BS6 emission norms, with prices now starting at Rs 4.99 lakh. While the entry-level model’s price has increased by Rs 4,000, the top-spec Triber RxZ variant now costs Rs 29,000 more than its BS4 counterpart. We have compiled the variant-wise price break-up below:

Renault Triber prices (ex-showroom, Delhi)
Variant BS6 Price BS4 Prices Difference
RxE Rs 4.99 lakh Rs 4.95 lakh Rs 4,000
RxL Rs 5.74 lakh Rs 5.49 lakh Rs 25,000
RxT Rs 6.24 lakh Rs 5.99 lakh Rs 25,000
RxZ Rs 6.78 lakh Rs 6.49 lakh Rs 29,000

The Triber uses a BS6-compliant version of the 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine, which produces 72hp and 96Nm of torque. The engine is offered with a sole 5-speed manual gearbox option. In BS4 form, the Triber had an ARAI fuel efficiency figure of 20kpl. It’ll be interesting to see if that changes.

There have been no changes to its features list as top-spec Tribers continue to get an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, a digital instrument cluster, AC vents in all three rows, a cooled centre box, keyless entry, push-button start/stop, power windows, projector headlamps with LED DRLs and more.

In terms of safety, all Tribers come with three-point seat belts on all rows, ABS, reverse parking sensors and at least two airbags. Additionally, top-spec variants get the added safety of front-side airbags and a rear parking camera.

As we had previously reported, the Triber will also get a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine option by March 2020. Renault is also working on an AMT automatic gearbox option for the Triber.

Review: Hyundai Aura review, test drive

The compact sedan segment is no longer compact, with over nine cars already present in the ring. And now entering the royal rumble, we have the Hyundai Aura. Rivaling the Maruti Dzire, which accounts for more than 50 percent of the sales in this segment, there’s no doubt that it’s going to be a tough battle for the Hyundai Aura to carve some space for its own. What works in the favor of the Aura is that buyers have a wide range of powertrains to choose from all of which are BS6-compliant. There’s an 83hp, 1.2-litre petrol engine from the Nios that also does duty in the Aura, and you also have a 69hp, CNG variant of the same. The diesel engine is also the same as the Nios, but it is in a BS6 avatar for the first time in the Aura. In addition to this, there’s a 100hp, 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that you will also find in the Venue compact SUV, but in a higher state of tune (120hp).

Just like most Hyundai cars we have seen recently, the Aura is loaded with features. And with the Xcent slowly moving into the fleet market, the Aura might just be the car to revive Hyundai’s presence in the segment. So, without further delay, let’s find out what kind of aura does this car have.

What’s it like on the outside?

The Aura’s face is similar to the Grand i10 Nios on which it is based, but there are a few design elements that differentiate the sedan from the hatchback. For starters, the oversized ‘cascading grille’ from the Nios is smaller on the Aura and gets a satin grey surround trim. In the turbo-petrol variant, you get a black surround, which looks much better. The wide grille now also houses double boomerang LED DRLs at the top. Sweptback halogen projector headlamps and the bonnet with aggressive creases have been carried over from the Nios, and they work well here too.

Talking about dimensions, while the length of all the cars in this segment is just shy of four metres, the Aura is narrower than the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Honda Amaze and even the Ford Aspire. In profile, you can see how Hyundai has smartly stretched the Nios’ length without making it feel like just a slap-on boot modification. The 2,450mm long wheelbase is 25mm longer than the Xcent’s, which translates into marginally more cabin space. The roofline merges into the boot nicely and ends in a neat little ducktail spoiler. The rear is where the Aura’s design might polarise opinions. While the LED tail-lights look good, they do seem oversized and don’t go well with the overall design language.

What’s it like on the inside?

The Aura’s cabin is heavily based on the Nios’ cabin with minor changes. The only differentiator from the Nios is the dashboard trim above the glovebox, which comes in a satin bronze finish. The turbo-petrol variant gets an all-black interior theme with red inserts. The seats finished in black with red stitching look great, with the honeycomb pattern on them, and all the other red accents also accentuate the sporty feel of the cabin.

The doors of the Aura open wide and the seats are set at a nice height, which makes ingress and egress quite easy. On the inside, you get a dual-tone black and light grey dashboard with the big 8.0-inch touchscreen taking centre stage. The touchscreen has a very user-friendly layout and is quite responsive as well. While there’s no e-SIM that enables connected car features, you do get the iBlue system that allows you to control the stereo via your smartphone. The touchscreen and the instrument cluster are connected by a piano black trim to make it look like a single unit. High quality materials do make the cabin feel premium and what’s even more important is the fact that the fit and finish levels are impressive too.

The front seats are wide and supportive, but they don’t get adjustable headrests like the Dzire’s. Moreover, the fixed headrests are small, which is uncomfortable for tall drivers. The seats are comfy as the cushioning is on point. However, as the lumbar support is a little excessive it might cause discomfort while driving for long hours. Seated in the rear, the cabin is just marginally roomier than the Xcent’s. In terms of legroom, the Dzire is clearly more spacious, but the Aura doesn’t feel cramped. The long seat squab also provides good under-thigh support. Headroom is adequate for tall passengers however, passengers taller than 6ft might be left wanting for more room. The backrest is set at a nice and comfortable angle and you do get adjustable headrests for rear passengers. A fixed headrest for the middle passenger, like in the Xcent, is missing. The 402-litre boot is quite spacious, but the loading lip is a little high.

The Aura is offered in five variants, and like we’ve said earlier, it is loaded with features. The turbo-petrol and AMT variants are offered in the SX+ trim while the petrol- and diesel-manual variants are offered in the top-end SX(O) trim. While the difference between the two variants is just cosmetic, the SX+ variant misses out on a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear knob. Talking about features in these two variants, you have an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, a 5.3-inch MID screen, wireless phone charger, cruise control (top-end petrol manual only), rear ac vents and a 12V charging socket for rear passengers. In terms of safety, the Aura is equipped with dual airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX child seat anchors, emergency stop signal and rear parking sensors with a camera.

What’s it like to drive?

We got to drive the new 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with a 5-speed manual transmission and the BS6 diesel engine with the 5-speed manual and AMT gearbox. The 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine is quiet at idle, but you can still feel the vibrations on the steering wheel and the pedals. Start driving and you will notice that this motor is quite rev-happy and moves through the range quite willingly. The turbo kicks in early, just above 1,800rpm, and provides a strong surge of power. The best part about this engine is its wide powerband, which makes keeping up with traffic and making quick overtakes easy tasks. The engine starts getting audible as you climb up the rev range and gets quite loud beyond 5,000rpm. But since the power keeps coming in strong till almost 6,000rpm and the engine has a hint of sporty growl to it, enthusiasts won’t mind being in the higher revs. Accompanied by a light clutch and gearbox combination, the turbo-petrol is an easy car to drive in a sedate as well as an enthusiastic manner.

In its BS6 guise, the 1.2-litre, three-cylinder diesel engine is quite refined. At idle, you can hear the diesel clatter though it slowly smoothens out as you start driving. Driving at low speeds isn’t much of a problem as the engine is quite responsive and a strong bottom-end masks turbo lag well. You won’t be shifting through the gears too much while driving through the city. In the mid-range, the engine has good power on tap till 4,000rpm, beyond which it starts losing steam. On the highways while cruising, the diesel runs silently and you won’t have to downshift too often to perform an overtaking manoeuvre. The clutch and gearbox remain effortless and smooth in the diesel variant as well. The AMT unit has a smooth creep function, and while the typical head nod is present, it is better than some of the other AMT units out there. The gearshifts aren’t quick – this has been done to keep the jerk between shifts to a minimum.

The Aura has MacPherson struts up front and a torsion beam axle at the rear. It rides on 175/60 R15 tyres, all of which makes the ride quality quite absorbent. There is an underlying stiffness to the suspension, which is why sharp potholes and bumps are felt in the cabin. On the highways, the Aura feels quite stable. A point worth mentioning here is that since the diesel has a heavier front-end, it feels more planted than the petrol variant. Similarly, in the corners, the diesel’s steering has that added weight that makes it much nicer to drive. The steering still doesn’t feel connected, but the added weight does allow you to carry more speed into corners. In contrast, the turbo-petrol variant, which is the engine that will be preferred by most enthusiasts, has a lighter steering. The brakes work well in emergency situations and the pedal feel is also progressive, with a nice and strong bite point as soon as you start braking.

Should I buy one?

Designed and specified to stand out from the crowd and especially the Maruti Dzire, the Hyundai Aura comes with flashy styling, a powerful and fun turbo-petrol and even a BS6-compliant diesel. It is well equipped and comfortable on the inside. It is powered by capable set of engines that come with AMT automatics too. There’s something for the enthusiast too, as the turbo-petrol variant does have its highlights.

The Aura is even priced competitively against cars like the Dzire, with prices starting at Rs 5.80 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) with the diesel in BS6 form only costing Rs 20,000 more than the one on the Xcent. Yes the cabin isn’t as spacious as the competition, the turbo-petrol is a bit expensive at Rs 8.55 lakh and those looking for an automatic version of the turbo-petrol won't get one. Still, the Aura offers so much more in comparison to the competition in certain areas. It seems poised to take a much larger slice of the pie.
