Toyota Fortuner BS6 coming soon, bookings open

The Toyota Fortuner is all set to be updated with a set of BS6-compliant engines in the coming weeks. Select Toyota dealerships across the country have unofficially begun accepting bookings for the BS6 Fortuner, with the booking amount set at Rs 50,000.

The Fortuner will continue to use the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel and 2.7-litre petrol engine, though both engines will be updated to comply with the stricter emission norms. The 2.8-litre, four cylinder turbo-diesel is BS6 form is expected to continue producing the same 177hp and 420Nm of torque as the BS4 model. This engine, however, has been discontinued on the BS6 Innova Crysta. The output of the BS6-compliant 2.7-litre, four-cylinder petrol unit is also expected to remain unchanged at 166hp and 245Nm of torque.

Both the engines will be available with 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque converter automatic gearboxes, though the diesel engine produces 30Nm more torque when paired to the automatic gearbox. The diesel will also continue to be offered with four-wheel drive (4WD) and rear-wheel drive (RWD) options, while the petrol will only come with the latter.

The interiors will remain more-or-less unchanged as the current model’s dashboard layout and two interior colour schemes – dark brown and Chamois (beige) – will be carried over. Features like a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with embedded navigation, paddleshifters (for the automatic only), 7 airbags, vehicle stability control with brake assist, hill-assist control and ABS with EBD will also be present on the higher-spec variants.

In terms of pricing, we expect the updated Fortuner to see a major price increase, in-line with the price bump seen on the BS6 Innova Crysta (around Rs 39,000-1.12 lakh for the diesel). Currently, the BS4 Fortuner petrol is priced between Rs 28.18-29.77 lakh, while diesel prices range from Rs 30.19-34.20 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Once updated, the SUV will continue to compete against the likes of the Ford EndeavourMahindra Alturas G4 and Isuzu MU-X, all of which are yet to be updated to BS6 emission standards.
