Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G is on TENAA, reveals no major changes in design

Samsung is preparing to launch a new version of the Galaxy Z Flip with 5G on August 5, when the Galaxy Note20 is also expected to arrive. The new phone is rumored to have a Snapdragon 865+ chipset and a different set of cameras, but today’s new photos on TENAA reveal practically no changes in the overall design. However, we do see a silver color of the body, which is different than any of the Mirror options Samsung initially introduced. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G While the camera one on the inside will retain the 12MP sensor, on the outside the setup will be 12 MP + 10 MP,...

Bentley Bentayga facelift breaks cover

  • Exterior changes bring the Bentayga more in-line with newer Bentleys on sale currently
  • Interior updates include even better seating, new trims and updated infotainment
  • Bentley has sold more than 20,000 units of the SUV since 2015

Bentley has finally unveiled the mid-cycle update for its popular Bentayga luxury SUV. The model will go on sale in Europe in the coming months, followed by launches in a number of Asian markets.

What exterior changes does it get?

The Bentayga has become a core model for Bentley, with more than 20,000 examples finding homes since it was launched back in 2015. The changes to the exterior aren’t radical as a result, rather serving to bring the SUV into line with the brand’s newer models, the Continental GT and Flying Spur. According to Bentley, every front-end and rear-end panel has been altered. The most notable change is the new ‘matrix’ grille, which is larger and 30mm higher, to give a “more impactful” profile.

This sits alongside new LED matrix headlights that have a cut-crystal design to make them sparkle, even when not lit. What’s more, the Bentayga's styling has been tweaked to visually widen the front track, while the rear axle is 20mm wider and the wheels are repositioned in the arches. The bonnet is also redesigned in a clamshell shape.

Further detail changes include new 3D elliptical tail-lights with animated LEDs, similar to those on the Continental GT, and a rear number plate repositioned on the bumper to allow for ‘Bentley’ to be spelled out across the tailgate. There’s also a larger rear spoiler, new side vents and a new set of 22-inch wheels, plus two new paint colours. New oval-shaped split tailpipes, heated wipers with 22 washer jets in each arm are also standard and there’s now an optional Blackline variant that gets blacked-out chrome on the external alterations.

What interior changes does it get?

There are significant changes to the cabin of the updated Bentayga. At the back, the new seat frames in combination with extra reclining now allow a 100mm increase in knee space. There are ventilated rear seats, too, while the Bentayga can still be had with four, five or seven seats. Rear passengers also receive an updated 5.0-inch removable touchscreen tablet to control entertainment and comfort functions.

Up front, the ageing infotainment has been overhauled. The new system comes with a high-resolution 10.9-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard fit. Other feature additions that bring it up-to-date include USB-C ports, air ionisers, wireless smartphone charging and an embedded SIM card for data services.

The traditional instrument dials have been replaced with a digital display, like in newer Bentleys, and the head-up display shows much more data. The audio system has been upgraded, too. As standard, there is a 790W, 12-speaker stereo, with an optional Naim for Bentley system taking that to 1780W and 20 speakers.

Bentley hasn’t just focused on the gadgets, however. The front seats are also of a new, more ergonomic design, while a revised centre fascia, steering wheel and door trims offer new sustainable veneer options, switchgear knurling and diamond brushed aluminium.

What's new under the hood?

Mechanical alterations are more limited. Notably, buyers in Europe and the UK now no longer have the option of the W12 engine, meaning the core choice is the same 550hp, 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V8 as in the current car. This unit retains the ability to deactivate four of its cylinders under light throttle loads to improve fuel economy. With the diesel V8 axed back in 2018, the only other powertrain choice is a reworked version of the V6 petrol-electric plug-in hybrid. That will be launched separately.

Will the updated Bentayga come to India?

The pre-facelift version of this SUV was on sale in India and we expect Bentley to  bring the updated Bentayga to India sometime next year.

Bridgestone, Microsoft showcase new tyre damage detector

  • Bridgestone and Microsoft have co-developed the Tyre Damage Monitoring System to reduce the risk of road accidents
  • The device can detect when a tyre has been damaged by an impact with a pothole, kerb or debris
  • It works in conjunction with sensors already fitted to a vehicle

Tyre manufacturer Bridgestone has teamed up with software giant Microsoft to develop a tyre damage detection device that could significantly reduce the risk of road accidents. The new Tyre Damage Monitoring System (TDMS) can detect when a tyre has been damaged by an impact with a pothole, kerb or debris and immediately notifies the driver.

The system uses data from Microsoft’s Connected Vehicle Platform (MCVP) cloud framework as well as from sensors already fitted to a vehicle and uses algorithms to detect irregularities in the tyre surface.

Because the system understands when and where damage has occurred, it could be used to notify road maintenance agencies about potholes or other hazards that pose a risk to drivers - a function that, Bridgestone says, will be especially useful for future autonomous vehicles.

The manufacturer claims that there is “no other equivalent monitoring system available in the market” and that the closest alternatives require additional hardware to be fitted to the vehicle.

Up until now tyre pressure monitoring systems could only detect pressure variations so would generally be slower to give warnings compared to Bridgestone’s new device.

Bridgestone estimates that tyre damage is a factor in 30 percent of all car accidents related to tyre failure and is particularly difficult to guard against without regular, close inspection. Damage to tyres can also have a knock-on effect on the wheels, as well as suspension and steering components, increasing the risk to safety.

The TDMS is now available to fleets and manufacturers that use MCVP to provide autonomous functions. Volkswagen, for example, uses MCVP as the basis for its own ‘Automotive Cloud’ digital infrastructure.

First Ducati Superleggera V4 delivered

  • First Superleggera V4 delivered in the Ducati factory

  • Production of the Ducati Superleggera V4 is limited to 500 units, worldwide

  • 998cc V4 engine produces 224hp in street-legal trim

Ducati delivered the first unit of the limited-edition Superleggera V4 superbike at its factory in Borgo Panigale, Italy. Bike number 001/500 was delivered to Filip Van Schil, a Belgian national, by Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali. The event marked the beginning of the deliveries of Ducati's new high performance V4 superbike that comes with some special goodies, which we'll get to later.

As part of the delivery process, Filip was given a guided tour of the Ducati factory, where he interacted with the team that builds the Superleggera V4. This was followed by a tour of the Ducati museum, Centro Stile Ducati and the Ducati racing department. He also received a copy of the book, Stile Ducati, bearing the date of delivery to mark the occasion.

Filip has owned nine Ducati motorcycles in the past and the new Superleggera V4 is understandably the most special yet. "When I received the call and the official invitation to come to Borgo Panigale to collect my Superleggera V4, the number 001 of 500, although I have always been a Ducatista, my legs trembled with emotion," said Filip Van Schil.

The Ducati Superleggera V4 takes the Ducati V4 experience to a whole new level, with a focus on reducing weight and, hence, improving performance. Which is why the Superleggera V4 has a carbon-fibre fairing, wheels, swingarm, frame and subframe. The Superleggera V4 tips the scales at 159kg (dry), which is 11kg lighter than the Panigale V4. Ducati will also supply a track-only, titanium Akrapovic exhaust that reduces the weight further to 152.2kg, while bumping up the power-to-weight ratio to 1.54hp/kg.

The Superleggera V4 is powered by a 998cc engine that develops 224hp in the street-legal trim. Fitting the Akrapovic track exhaust liberates an additional 10hp, taking the total output to 234hp! You can read more about the Superleggera V4 here.

A special motorcycle also means owners get special memorabilia in the form of a sculptural reproduction of the Superleggera V4; the scale model features the same serial number as on the actual motorcycle. Owners also get their Superleggera V4 delivered in a wooden crate, with a certificate of authenticity included.

That's not all. Buying the Superleggera V4 gives owners the chance to experience the Panigale V4 R as part of the 'Superbike Experience'. Besides this, 30 owners will get an opportunity to Desmosedici GP machine under the guidance of the Ducati Corse staff.

Regardless of when the Pixel 4a will actually become available, it's continuing its certification march. It was...

Land Rover Defender commercial model revealed

  • Land Rover will revive the Hard Top moniker for the commercial version of the Defender
  • The Hard Top is being developed by the Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division
  • To make it more commercially-oriented the Defender will get tech to simplify towing

Land Rover will revive the Hard Top name for the upcoming commercial version of the new Defender. The brand has promised the new machine will offer “a unique combination of cargo space, practicality and comfort”. The new commercial Defender will be available in some markets later this year in both three-door 90 and five-door 110 forms.

The Hard Top moniker was first used by the British marque in 1950, when a removable roof was introduced for the Series 1 Land Rover.

The new Defender Hard Top is being developed by Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations division. While the firm has yet to reveal full technical information, it says the machine is designed to offer maximum cargo space, while maintaining the premium features from the passenger versions of the new Defender.

Both 90 and 110 Hard Top models use independent coil-sprung suspension, with electronic air suspension optional on the larger model. The Hard Tops also have a 3,500kg towing capacity, and will feature a range of systems to make towing easier - including Advanced Tow Assist, which allows drivers to steer trailers using the rotary dial on the centre control.

Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations boss Michael van der Sande said that the interior of the Hard Top was designed to “maximise the functionality and usability” of the cargo area, using “tough materials and clever storage solutions to ensure it surpasses the capability of any previous Defender Hard Top”.

To maximise cargo space, the cabin doesn’t keep the second or third row of seats, but it will offer the option of a ‘jump seat’ that allows three people to sit in the front row. Land Rover's ClearSight rear-view mirror, which can show images from a HD rear camera on the rear-view mirror, will be available to make reversing easier if a full load in the cargo bay is limiting visibility.

As with the standard Defender, the Hard Top features Jaguar Land Rover’s latest infotainment and driver assistance features, including the latest version of the firm's PIVI Pro infotainment system. This will include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and the ability to receive wireless software updates.

Land Rover India has not announced any plans to bring the commercial version of the Defender to our market. However, it began accepting orders for the Defender in India earlier this year. The carmaker will offer both the 90 and 110 version of the SUV in our market with prices ranging from Rs 69.99-87.10 lakh (ex-showroom, India). Dealer sources have confirmed bookings for the Defender 90 have been put on hold and will likely reopen only from September. As a result, deliveries for the 3-door version are expected to get delayed by a few months, while deliveries for the larger 110 will start in August 2020, as per the original timeline.

Review: 2020 Honda City review, test drive

What is it?

SUVs may rule the roost today, but the City, even 22 years on, is still alive and kicking, and is one of the longest-running nameplates currently on sale in India. The City’s India story began in 1998 and we’ve had four versions since. The first three cars were all very unique in character, with each model being a success for Honda.

Uncharacteristically then, the 4th-generation was more of an evolution, but thanks to the further improvements and introduction of a diesel option, it went on to become the most successful City in India, and it’s this very evolutionary approach that's been carried forward to the 5th-gen City.

Don’t think for a moment though that it's a simple update of the previous car. While it is based on a modified version of the earlier City, the engineering changes are massive. The new City’s body shell packs in more high-tensile-strength steel and a stiffer roof section, resulting in a 20 percent increase in torsional rigidity. The body shell is marginally lighter too, but the overall weight of the car is up by around 40kg thanks to other enhancements like a firewall that is 200 percent thicker aiding stiffness, safety and sound insulation.

3D surfacing adds character.

The City has also grown in size, offering a little more interior space, and it’s got more tech like a lane watch camera and Alexa voice assistant integration. On the powertrain front, the petrol motor is a new DOHC 1.5-litre unit that’s now coupled to a 6-speed manual gearbox. CVT is still an option. The older City’s 1.5 diesel and 6-speed manual carry forward too, but with some modifications to improve refinement and, of course, meet BS6 emission norms.

The new City won’t have it easy though. Action in the midsize sedan segment has certainly hotted up; in a short a span of just a few weeks we’ve seen Skoda update its Rapid, as did VW its Vento, while Hyundai gave the Verna a major overhaul. The Ciaz continues to be a strong player too. So can the new City leapfrog all its rivals?

What’s it like on the outside?

The City looks more of an evolution of the previous model and the overall stance, shape and design of the individual elements remind you of the earlier car. While the wheelbase is the same as before (as this platform shares a lot of the hardpoints with the previous-gen), the new car has grown a fair bit in length and width, though the height is less than before.

Honda’s signature front chrome bar is now thicker with the top strip stretching across the width of the nose, above the LED highlights. The sharp-looking headlights with their multiple reflectors and techy detailing look brilliant, and make the new City stand out as genuinely new.

Alloys look smart, but wheels are too small for the wheel wells.

It’s from the side that you get a good idea of the new City’s enormous length, which at 4,549mm, makes it not just longer than every other midsizer but even longer than the first-gen Civic! Yes, the City which is equally appreciated for its front and back seats, has grown with each successive generation. However, with no corresponding increase in wheelbase over the previous car, the proportions have slightly gone for a toss. The long, high bonnet and chunky bumper make the car look more grown-up than before, but the nose sticks out quite a bit, resulting in a front overhang that’s a touch excessive.

This dwarfs the smart 16-inch looking alloys shod with 185/55 tyres which don’t quite fill out the wheel arches. The earlier car’s shoulder line has been moved higher up and it runs the length of the car, and this, along with the sharp crease across the bottom of the doors, gives a nice tension to the body.

The 9 LED array looks striking.

The 3D-looking tail-lights are also very striking and the blacked-out elements look very neat. What also stands out are the vertical reflector strips that sit inside a sculpted housing in the rear bumper. On the whole, though, this isn’t a car that will turn heads easily but it’s neatly designed and looks quite contemporary.

What’s it like inside?

Open the doors and you’re greeted by a premium-looking, light brown and black interior. The plastics around the cabin also look good but they are a bit too shiny; we would have preferred duller, soft-touch textures. This aside, there’s little else to complain about. Honda has been generous with the use of light brown leather; it's on the seats, door trims, dash panel and the centre console too, and it really does add to the rich feel inside. The dash and centre console trim are beautifully styled with neat stitching and the well-sculpted seats look very inviting. They are comfortable with good all-round bolstering, but if I had to nitpick, the lower lumbar support is a bit excessive on the front and rear seats.

Dashboard is well laid out and looks nice and premium, but they are a bit too shiny; would have preferred duller, soft-touch textures.

Honda aced backseat comfort with the 4th-gen City, and has done it yet again with a rear bench that's the most generous in the class. The wide and deep seat base, positioned at the right height, will keep you comfortable for hours on the road. Like before, the small rise in the floor behind the front seat, acts as a natural footrest which further enhances comfort levels. What’s nice is that all three rear passengers get three-point seat belts and properly sized head restraints. However, headroom at the back was just about sufficient for my 5ft 8in frame; I had a three-finger gap to the top, which means taller folks may find it tight.

Just like the rear, front seats are comfy but with little extra lumbar support.

There’s plenty of the usual storage spaces around but what’s really clever are the ones for phones. Front passengers have two slots on either side of the parking brake lever, while those at the rear have handy felt-lined pockets sewn into the front seatbacks. Boot space has gone down by a tiny 4 litres and is now at 506 litres; so it’s still very large and useable.

Comfy seats and good legroom, headroom is tight for taller passengers.

The boot-opening mechanism uses torsion rods which act as elastic springs to lift the boot lid, but they aren’t strong enough; so the lid doesn’t pop open on its own and you have to lift it all the way to the top.

How about equipment?

Hondas aren't typically what you’d call well-equipped, this City, however, is quite different. There’s a lot of equipment including a sunroof, a lane watch camera, a rear-view camera with normal, wide and top view, a tyre pressure monitoring system with deflation warning, front side and curtain airbags, and auto climate control that thankfully doesn't get touch-operated buttons but neat knurled knobs that have a nice click to them; this means you don’t have to take your eyes off the road to use the controls. The steering wheel too has controls including a roller switch that lets you access various features of the instrument panel.

Dials turn with a satisfying click.

The instrument panel itself consists of an analogue speedometer needle that runs across a digital dial on the 7.0-inch screen. The tachometer is an all-digital display and the screen can also display a G-force meter, and other trip-related info. The design of instrument panel display is quite simple but its clarity is brilliant and isn't distracting like in the Verna. The bright and sharp instrument cluster is incredibly easy to read, however, the same cannot be said of the 8.0-inch touchscreen.

Sunroof isn’t very large, can be opened and closed remotely.

Honda says it has used an optical bonding application that reduces reflection but the trouble is that this coating has seriously reduced the brightness of the screen. Even on the brightest setting, the screen is difficult to read in direct sunlight, and it always looks smudgy like it could use a good wipe down. The system, of course, has all the usual connectivity bits including Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Dim screen, hard to see in the day.

Also on the 5th-gen City is a new version of Honda’s connectivity tech that gets you all the regular bits like remote engine start, pre-cooling, but the party trick here is the Alexa voice assistant integration. So, from your home, you can simply ask Alexa to pre-cool the cabin or get you details of the fuel level in the car or its current position.

A segment-first lane watch camera is offered on the new City.

What’s it like to drive?

If there’s one high point of a Honda, it’s the engine; and it’s the same here with the new DOHC 1.5-litre petrol which is a real delight. It’s not punchy like a turbo unit but it’s very strong and tractable and works well at both ends of the rev range. At low revs, it pulls cleanly even in higher gears, and it revs freely until the 7,000rpm redline. Compared to the older car, gear ratios are a bit taller here, letting you hit higher speeds in each gear, but what’s good is that the motor is flexible enough to deliver great performance all throughout. This tractability allows you to drive right from 15kph all the way past 150kph in 3rd! This means you’ll have fewer gears shifts to contend with. Honda claims a fuel efficiency of 17.8 for the manual and 18.4kpl for the auto, which is marginally higher than the earlier car's SOHC motor which delivered 17.4 and 18.0kpl, respectively.

The new City gets a DOHC 1.5-litre petrol engine.

The new engine does get audible at around 3,000rpm but it’s not harsh just loud. It’s also pretty potent too; the City hits 100kph from a standstill in 10.20sec, which is just 0.07sec off the earlier car's time, and only marginally behind Skoda’s turbocharged 1.0 TSI Rapid time of 10.09sec.

Taller ratios also mean in-gear times are slower. 20-80kph in 3rd comes up in 13.23sec, while 40-100kph in 4th takes 18.23sec.The Rapid 1.0 TSI clocks 11.69 and 14.38 sec, respectively.

Coupled to the CVT, the City does 0-100kph in 12.05sec. Although slower, it still will be acceptable for most, and you’ll also have the benefit of an automatic kickdown during in-gear acceleration which showed a time of 6.58sec in 20-80kph, and 8.52sec in the 40-100kph dash.

2020 Honda City performance figures (as tested)
Petrol MT Petrol CVT* Diesel MT*
0-20kph 1.17sec 1.45sec 1.17sec
0-40kph 2.74sec 3.39sec 2.97sec
0-60kph 4.53sec 5.54sec 5.30sec
0-80kph 7.22sec 8.38sec 8.64sec
0-100kph 10.20sec 12.05sec 12.90sec
0-120kph 14.98sec 16.69sec 18.26sec
0-140kph 20.71sec 24.30sec 27.05sec
20-80kph 13.23sec 6.58sec** 11.40sec
40-100kph 18.23sec 8.52sec** 13.89sec

*Tests not to Autocar India standards, **acceleration in kickdown

What’s nice is that the typical rubberband effect of the CVT is very well managed. For most everyday driving situations, the rise in revs matches the rise in road speed and it's only when you mash down on the accelerator that you get the typically stretchy feel, with the revs climbing faster than the actual road speed. Plus, of course, you can also use the paddles and have proper manual control over shifts with the 'box letting you redline the engine too.

Honda says it has calibrated the control unit's software, and it uses what the company calls 'full-open acceleration step-up shift control' and 'brake operation step-down shift control. Quite a mouthful, yes, but what this does is, during acceleration, rather than let the CVT slide its way up, it performs stepped upshifts and tries to match the vehicle speed with the engine speed and sound. And under hard braking, the CVT shifts to much lower ratios thus providing engine braking; this is something we saw put into effect when driving down a winding road.

Engines are phenomenally tractable, in 3rd gear the petrol can go all the way from 15kph to over 150kph!

If you’ve read our past reviews of the City diesel, or even cars like the Amaze that use the same 1.5 diesel, you’ll know we haven’t been fans of the refinement levels. However, Honda has worked to improve NVH levels on the new City, utilising bits like additional sound deadeners in the floor, a thicker firewall, and by also spraying the engine bay with a special sound-deadening coating. The result is an engine that’s noticeably quieter and pleasantly refined. At low revs, this motor doesn't get obtrusive, and that annoying, sharp diesel clatter that characterised the previous iterations is all but eliminated. Yes, the engine drones loudly at high revs, and, in absolute terms, isn't as quiet as Hyundai’s 1.5 diesel, which is still the benchmark for refinement.

2020 Honda City petrol noise levels (as tested)
Idle with AC off 39.4dB
Idle with AC blower at half 51.7dB
Idle with AC blower at full 64.5dB
50kph in 4th gear 64.5dB
80kph in 6th gear 69dB
Full revs at redline in 1st gear 78.2dB at 7000rpm

The diesel also surprised us with its un-diesel-like power delivery. It’s pretty tractable from low revs and turbo lag is quite minimal too. Sure, at low revs, below 1,500rpm, the power is muted, but you don’t really struggle with a lack of response. And when you cross the 1,500rpm, it's not a sudden spike but a quick step up in pace, after which power builds quite evenly all the way to 4,200rpm soft rev limiter. The diesel posts a 0-100kph time of 12.9sec, while 20-80kph in 3rd and 40-100kph in 4th are much quicker than the petrol, with 11.4 and 13.89sec, respectively. As with many BS6 updates, fuel efficiency has dropped, the new unit returning 24.1kpl as against the previous 25.6kpl. Honda has used a NOx Storage Catalyst (NSC), thus avoiding the use of the AdBlue liquid that SCR systems need. The penalty for this, of course, is the slight drop in efficiency, which is due to the extra fuel being used for exhaust after-treatment.

Diesel engine refinement better but still not segment-leading.

What’s the ride and handling like?

Thanks to the stiffer body, Honda says it's been able to go softer with the suspension, and this has certainly helped the ride. The City absorbs whatever the road throws at it and it soaks up potholes and ruts without crashing through them. The ride is quite mature in feel, much like what you’d expect from European sedans. It’s also flat and composed at highway speeds, but if you press on to higher three-digit speeds, with the speedo needle sitting in the last quadrant of the dial, the City, which has a relatively high ground clearance, is not as planted as we would have liked. You need to have a firm grip on the wheel as the nose tends to wander.

The ride feels quite mature.

Handling, however, is benign and very predictable, which makes the City an easy car to drive. The steering is nicely weighted and the grip from the tyres is surprisingly good and could tempt you to have some fun, especially when you have a rev-happy, naturally-aspirated engine that’s always ready to play ball. But, if you push too hard, the soft-suspension will give way to a fair bit of body roll, which is more pronounced in the front.

Braking performance is good, however an earlier bite point and a less spongy pedal feel would've helped. All in all, this a car will reward all but the keenest of drivers.

Despite the narrow tyres, cornering grip is good but there is noticeable body roll.

Should you buy one?

The new City may not look all that new and it doesn’t deviate from the tried and tested formula of its predecessors. The handling isn’t sporty either, and the chassis setup doesn’t quite match the enthusiasm of the rev-happy petrol, and that may disappoint keen drivers. But there’s little else to fault with Honda’s latest midsize sedan and it scores where it matters most. Space and overall comfort are the best in class, the practical cabin with lots of thoughtful touches looks very premium, and, for a change, it’s very well specced with some neat party tricks like the Alexa integration. Both engines are strong and deliver a solid performance, and the ride is very well sorted too.

On the whole, Honda has done a tremendous job with the new City, and it looks all set to leapfrog the competition. A spoiler, however, could be its price. For the first time in its history, Honda India will have on sale two generations of the same car, and the current model with a starting price of Rs. 9.91 lakh, is already pricier than rivals. Hence, Honda will have to position and price the new model smartly to ensure it doesn’t leap out of the segment and contention.

2020 Honda WR-V facelift India launch on July 2

  • Honda WR-V facelift prices to be revealed on July 2
  • Cosmetic changes and a re-jigged variant line-up are among the major changes
  • BS6-compliant petrol and diesel engine options to be on offer

Honda Car India has announced that prices for the WR-V facelift will be revealed on July 2, 2020. The launch of the 2020 WR-V facelift has delayed significantly due to the coronavirus pandemic and is now expected to take place online only.

What’s new on the 2020 WR-V?

Visually, the 2020 WR-V gets a mild update, which does succeed in keeping the model looking fresh. New design elements include more pronounced creases on the front bumper, the new grille with horizontal slats, and new LED projector headlights and LED tail-lights. As before, the WR-V will get roof rails, 16-inch alloy wheels and LED DRLs too.

In terms of features, there aren’t expected to be many changes; the most obvious differences will be seen in the updated fabric patterns and upholstery. Only two trim lines are expected to be offered with the 2020 WR-V - SV and VX - both will be well-kitted.

The entry-level WR-V SV is expected to get features such as dual front airbags, a rear defogger, a rear parking camera, 16-inch alloy wheels, projector headlights, LED DRLs, driver’s seat height adjust, power folding and adjustable ORVMs, power windows, automatic climate control, the 7.0-inch Digipad 2.0 touchscreen infotainment interface, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility and SD card-based navigation.

The top-spec WR-V VX will add a rear wiper LED headlights, tail-lights and fog lights, a front centre armrest, cruise control, keyless entry and go, a leather-wrapped steering and a powered sunroof.

Any mechanical changes on the 2020 WR-V?

Except for the significant upgrades required to meet BS6 emission norms, the 2020 WR-V is expected to be identical to the pre-facelift model. In BS6 form, the 119hp, 1.5-litre petrol engine and the 100hp, 1.5-litre diesel engine are already used on the current (fourth)-gen City and the Amaze compact sedan, respectively. Manual gearboxes are standard on both; sadly, no automatic option is expected on the WR-V facelift. In diesel-manual guise, the WR-V is expected to be more fuel-efficient than compact SUV rivals like the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Ford EcoSport and Mahindra XUV300.

Expect prices to increase over the outgoing model to Rs 8.3-9.4 lakh for the petrol WR-V, while diesel WR-V prices are expected in the Rs 9.7-10.8 lakh bracket. A 3-year/unlimited kilometre warranty is expected to be as standard as well.

Volkswagen ID.3 R likely to debut in 2024

  • ID.3 R hot-hatch likely to be rear-wheel drive only and have at least 304hp on tap
  • Standard ID.3 international deliveries to start from September despite software issues
  • Production ID. Roomz, ID. Buzz and ID. Vizzion expected to arrive by end-2022 followed by an ID city car and Mercedes EQB-rivalling SUV

Volkswagen bosses are close to signing off plans for a hot, R-badged version of the forthcoming ID.3 electric hatchback. Sources have told our sister publication Autocar UK that the performance machine is set to be launched in 2024.

The electric hot-hatch is the brainchild of the German firm’s R performance division. It’s intended to reinforce the links between the successful ID. R record-breaking prototype and Volkswagen’s crucial new ID road car range.

Volkswagen development chief Frank Welsch said the ID.3 R is “something we’re looking at”. He added: “I like the idea, but we have to decide if the market is ready to accept such a model.”

Welsch said the proposed R model would sit at the top of the ID.3 line-up and could be the only pure performance variant.

Volkswagen’s planned electric-specific performance badge, GTX, won’t be used on the ID.3, because it’s reserved for cars with the twin-motor, four-wheel-drive powertrain. While that will fit in the larger ID.4 SUV, the ID.3 is being launched with a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive setup only.

“The ID.3 can accept four-wheel drive, although it’s unlikely to receive it during the first generation,” Welsch told Autocar UK. “There will not be a GTX variant, but we’re yet to decide on a rear-wheel-drive R variant.” Last year, Welsch had said such a car “would need a performance e-motor and four-wheel drive”.

The most powerful of the ID.3 launch models offers 204hp, although the planned R model is expected to have at least 304hp. However, the performance necessary for an ID.3 R could be made possible by likely developments in EV technology by 2024.

R chief Jost Capito recently told Autocar UK it was working with Volkswagen’s motorsport arm to see what technology from the performance batteries used in the ID R could be applied to road cars.

ID 3 to arrive in September despite software issues

The late stages of the ID 3’s development have been badly hit by software issues, but new Volkswagen CEO Ralf Brandstätter confirmed that deliveries will begin in Europe and the UK in early September.

However, the initial limited-edition First models will arrive without a number of software features. These include the augmented reality functions for the car’s head-up display and some of the App Connect features, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

A free software update will be offered once the systems are available. Early buyers can also choose to delay receipt of their ID 3 until the systems are fully ready.

The ID 3 will eventually be sold with three battery capacities and two power outputs. The First edition, which was offered to people who pre-booked a car, will use the mid-sized 58kWh battery for a claimed range of 420km. It will have 204hp, 310Nm and a 160kph top speed.

More ID models also in the works

The next ID model from VW is set to be the ID4 which is set to debut in late-August this year. The electric SUV will mirror the exterior dimensions of the soon-to-be-facelifted second-generation Tiguan and offer seating for up to five.

Two versions will be offered: a standard model with an upright tailgate and an emphasis on versatility and a sportier version with a coupé-like profile, potentially using the Cross suffix.

At launch, the ID.4 will be exclusively rear-wheel drive, with a single electric motor offering up to 204hp and 310Nm. A more powerful, four-wheel-drive GTX model running two motors with a combined 306hp and 450Nm will join the line-up within the first 12 months of sales.

The ID 4 will be sold with a range of batteries up to 83kWh, giving a range of as much as 500km. All models will also offer charging at up to 125kW.

Sources have also revealed to Autocar UK that development of the production version of the ID Roomz, ID Buzz and ID Vizzion concepts is already well progressed with all three set to make their debuts by the end of 2022.

Work is also advanced on the ‘ID Entry’ small car, set to be named the ID.1. Positioned as a successor to the Volkswagen e-Up, Seat Mii Electric and Skoda Citigo-e iV, it’s due to enter production by 2023.

It was originally planned to have its own low-cost platform and electric drivetrain developed by Seat and the Volkswagen Group’s Chinese partner, JAC Automobile, but development has been taken in-house at Volkswagen.

Also under development, but yet to be confirmed, is a production version of the secretive ID Ruggdzz. The Land Rover Defender-esque off-roader forms part of what sources call an ‘icon project’ to establish “a line of ID models with the same timeless and classless qualities as the original Beetle”.

Conceived to rival the Mercedes-Benz EQB, it’s said to feature rugged styling cues and a choice of five or seven seats. Sources suggest the range-topping ID Ruggdzz model will have a twin-motor, four-wheel-drive powertrain.

The ID Ruggdzz is expected to enter production in 2023 as part of a 30-strong Volkswagen SUV line-up planned by 2025.

The ID. all-electric range is expected to come to India sometime next year with the introduction of the ID.4 SUV. The EV was showcased in pre-production form as the ID. Crozz at Auto Expo 2020.

Toyota brand reputation deciding factor for Glanza buyers

  • Almost 40-60 percent of Glanza buyers are first time Toyota owners

  • Base G variant of the Glanza is seeing the highest demand

  • Around 21-24 percent of Glanza customers are choosing the hybrid option

The Toyota Glanza was launched in June 2019 as the first product born out of the collaboration between Suzuki and Toyota in India. Despite being a totally badge-engineered version of the Baleno with no differentiation at all (except, of course, for the badges) the Glanza has managed to pull in more than 25,000 customers in its first year of sales, providing Toyota a successful entry into what was essentially a new market segment for the company.

We caught up with Naveen Soni, senior vice president, sales and service, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, to get a better insight into what has helped the brand draw in buyers.

Toyota customer experience a key differentiator

Soni revealed that while Toyota has a loyal customer base that remains dedicated to the brand's portfolio, a majority of the Glanza buyers are new to the Toyota family. Over the course of the past year, new customers have contributed to as much as 40-60 percent of the premium hatchback's sales. And a key differentiator for attracting a fresh set of prospects has been Toyota's customer experience.

"The idea is that we have a product offering from a Toyota dealership which is unique and differentiated from what others can offer. So when I sell a car from a Toyota dealership, it comes as a package. Sales is just one part of the package," said Soni. Toyota's ease of service, roadside assistance and warranty are other factors which, according to the sales chief, have helped enhance the value proposition and close the deal. The Glanza comes with a 3-year/1,00,000 kilometre warranty compared to the Baleno's 2-year/40,000 kilometre standard offer.

Taking things further, special sales schemes are another novelty that Toyota adds to the equation. The company's buyback program, for instance, assures owners a 55 percent value for the Glanza after a three-year period, thus helping minimise resale concerns.

"There is a natural tendency that no amount of advertisement can sway the customers’ mind as much as word of mouth can," he added. The sense of a positive experience from existing Glanza owners is further believed to have catalysed sales.

Higher demand for lower variants

The company reports a spurt in Glanza sales in the post lockdown era, with the share of the hatchback in Toyota's total sales on the rise. With the looming threat of COVID-19, the need to commute in a safer environment has gained prominence. And the fact that priced at Rs 7.01-8.96 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), the Glanza forms the entry point to the Toyota range has certainly worked in its favour.

Moreover, economic uncertainty playing on the minds of consumers has seen a significantly higher demand for the Glanza's base trim. "Most of the customers who are walking into the Toyota dealerships now and looking for a Glanza are asking one simple question – which is the lowest price variant that you have in the Glanza?" commented Soni.

Toyota's hatchback is offered in two variants - G and V - which are equivalent to the top-level Zeta and Alpha trims of the Baleno. Consequently, even the entry-level G trim is sufficiently equipped, with kit like a touchscreen infotainment and auto climate control, which helps make it a popular choice.

Every fourth Glanza sold is a hybrid

Being synonymous with hybrid technology, Toyota not only made a conscious effort of bringing in an electrified variant of the Glanza, but also positioned it prudently. At the time of launch, the Glanza G hybrid undercut the equivalent Zeta version of the Baleno by a significant Rs 65,000, though the price difference since then has reduced to Rs 42,000.

At 23.87kpl, the 90hp, 1.2-litre petrol-hybrid also posts an advantage of 2.86kpl over the non-electrified, 83hp engine. A keen pricing and higher mileage claim have presented a strong enough business case for 21-24 percent of Glanza customers to choose the hybrid option.

Spurred by the success of the Glanza, Toyota is now gearing up to launch the second product under its collaboration with Suzuki. Slated to be dubbed the Urban Cruiser, the rebadged version of the Maruti Vitara Brezza will sport greater product differentiation through some mild styling tweaks. Expect the Toyota compact SUV to hit showroom floors around August.

BS6 Renault Triber fuel economy revealed

  • The Triber uses a BS6-compliant 72hp, 1.0-litre, petrol engine
  • Gearbox options now include a 5-speed manual and a 5-speed AMT
  • BS6 engine paired with the manual gearbox is 1kpl less efficient than its BS4 counterpart

The Renault Triber was launched in August 2019 with a BS4-compliant petrol engine. Earlier in 2020, the compact 7-seater made the switch to a BS6-compliant version of the 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. More recently, the line-up has expanded with the launch of the automatic version of the Triber, which is equipped with a 5-speed AMT gearbox.

As we’ve witnessed on multiple cars that have been upgraded to the latest emission norms, the BS6 Triber’s fuel economy is also down on the earlier BS4 version’s number. With the 5-speed manual gearbox, the Triber is certified with an ARAI-tested 19kpl economy; or 1kpl less than the equivalent BS4 version. The new AMT variant has been certified with an economy figure of 18.29kpl.

How does the Renault Triber compare on fuel economy?

The Renault Triber takes on the Datsun Go+ and can also be clubbed with like-priced hatchbacks like the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios, Maruti Suzuki Swift and Ford Figo. Here’s how the cars in question compare on fuel economy.

Renault Triber vs rivals: Mileage
Triber Go+ Grand i10 Nios Swift Figo
Engine 1.0-litre, 3 cyls, naturally aspirated 1.2-litre, 3 cyls, naturally aspirated 1.2-litre, 4 cyls, naturally aspirated 1.2-litre, 4 cyls, naturally aspirated 1.2-litre, 3 cyls, naturally aspirated
Power 72hp 68hp (MT)/77hp (AT) 83hp 83hp 96hp
Torque 96Nm 104Nm 114Nm 113Nm 119Nm
Gearbox 5-speed MT/AMT 5-speed MT/CVT 5-speed MT/AMT 5-speed MT/AMT 5-speed MT
ARAI mileage (MT) 19kpl 19.02kpl 20.7kpl 21.21kpl 18.5kpl
ARAI mileage (AT) 18.29kpl 18.57kpl 20.5kpl 21.21kpl -

From the table above, we can see that while the Triber provides practicality and seating for seven, in the engine department it is overshadowed by the hatchbacks and has the second lowest ARAI mileage figure. Although, its figures are only a fraction lower than the Datsun Go+, which ekes out 0.2kpl more in manual form and 0.28kpl more in automatic guise.

Without a doubt, it is the Maruti Suzuki Swift that is the most efficient offering, as it returns 21.21kpl in both manual and automatic versions. The Ford Figo, on the other hand, has the lowest fuel economy – 18.5kpl – in manual form and is not currently available with an automatic.

We should also mention that we are using ARAI-tested mileage claims; real world figures always tend to be lower. Hyundai also offers a Grand I10 Nios Turbo with a sportier 100hp, 1.0-litre, turbo-petrol engine, which has been left out of this comparison.

How does the Renault Triber compare on price?

Renault Triber vs rivals: Price
Triber Go Grand i10 Nios Swift Figo
Price range Rs 4.99-7.22 lakh Rs 4.20-6.90 lakh Rs 5.07-7.69 lakh Rs 5.14-7.97 lakh Rs 5.39-6.95 lakh

Mercedes-AMG details new electric turbocharger technology

  • New electrically assisted unit to replace existing gas-driven turbos in AMG’s 2.0-litre and 4.0-litre engines
  • Company says new e-turbos feature F1-derived tech and are from those used in AMG’s 3.0-litre, six-cylinder unit

Mercedes-Benz’s AMG performance division has detailed a new electrically assisted exhaust gas turbocharger system that will appear on its next generation of models.

Claimed to draw on technology originally developed by AMG’s High Performance Powertrain division for Mercedes' Formula 1 engine, it is planned to replace the exhaust-gas-driven turbo setups presently used by AMG on both its 2.0-litre four-cylinder and 4.0-litre V8 engines.

Described as being in the final stages of development, the new turbocharger has been designed and engineered in co-operation with Garrett Motion and is claimed to possess a different operation to the electrically assisted exhaust-gas turbocharger used on AMG’s 3.0-litre six-cylinder 53-series models.

The new system uses a compact electric motor integrated on the turbocharger shaft, between the compressor wheel on the fresh-air side and the turbine wheel on the exhaust side, to boost induction. The motor, which is operated via a 48V electrical system, is used to drive the compressor wheel prior to the introduction of exhaust gas flow in a process aimed at eliminating turbo lag.

Mercedes-AMG says its new turbocharger can operate at up to 1,70,000rpm – in the process providing a much higher rate of air flow. The new electric motor and power electronics system are connected to the combustion engine's cooling circuit.

“We have clearly defined our goals for an electrified future,” said outgoing AMG chairman, Tobias Moers. “With this move we are strategically supplementing our modular technology and tailoring it to our performance requirements. In a first step this includes the electrified turbocharger – an example of the transfer of Formula 1 technology to the road, something with which we will take turbocharged combustion engines to a previously unattainable level.”

While it has yet to reveal further technical information to the new system, Mercedes-AMG says the new electric-assisted exhaust-gas turbo “significantly improves response from idle speed, as well as across the entire engine speed range”. Additionally, it claims the new turbocharger “enables higher torque at lower engine speeds”, leading to “optimised acceleration capability from standstill and enhanced agility”.
