Poco X3 is officially arriving on September 7

Qualcomm and Poco announced the new X3 phone will be the first with Snapdragon 732G chipset, and now we know exactly when it's coming - September 7 at 12 noon UTC. The brand confirmed the date on its social media pages and revealed it will be an online launch event. Interestingly enough, the phone is called Poco X3 NFC and the moniker also appeared at the Bluetooth SIG website, where the device with model number M2007J20CG was certified. This raises the question of whether the company will have another version of the X3 without near-field communication. Poco X3 NFC on...

New car unveils and launches in September 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic may have forced the automotive industry to come to a brief halt, but carmakers are now aiming to rebuild momentum with a slew of new offerings. In this piece, we’ll tell you about all the new cars and SUVs that are set to debut in September 2020, along with some launches that will take place in India as we enter the festive season.

  • Skoda Enyaq, new Mercedes S-class and Rolls-Royce Ghost to debut
  • Kia Sonet, Toyota Urban Cruiser, Mercedes-Benz EQC set for India launch
  • 3-row Jeep Grand Wagoneer concept, Maserati MC20to be unveiled

2021 Rolls-Royce Ghost (Unveil; September 1)

We’ve seen bits of the second-generation Rolls-Royce Ghost in the build-up to its unveil at the start of September. What we know so far is the all-new Ghost will get laser headlights (with a 600m illumination range), an illuminated dashboard panel that echoes Rolls’ iconic Starlight headliner, all-wheel-drive and all-wheel steering.

Based on the same aluminium platform as the Cullinan and Phantom, the new Ghost will also feature new ‘Planar’ suspension and exhaustive sound-deadening measures. It’s expected to make the switch to the Phantom's 6.75-litre, twin-turbo V12, and is set to reach India sometime in 2021.

Skoda Enyaq iV (Unveil; September 1)

First previewed as the Vision iV concept in 2019, the production-spec Skoda Enyaq iV will finally make its world premiere late on September 1. Skoda’s first all-electric model based on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform, the design of the Enyaq iV has already been revealed in a few design sketches, and we also know it’ll come with a 13.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a head-up display with augmented reality and a 585-litre boot.

Skoda has also previously confirmed the Enyaq will be offered with a choice of rear and all-wheel drive layouts, three battery sizes and up to five power outputs. The range-topping Enyaq iV will have a 125kWhbattery and a claimed range of nearly 500 kilometres.

2021 Mercedes-Benz S-class (Unveil; September 2)

One of the biggest unveils of the year, the all-new Mercedes-Benz S-class will debut on September 2. Internally known as the ‘W223’, the new-gen S-class will aim to once again shift the goalposts for luxury sedans, and in the run-up to its debut, Mercedes-Benz has already given the world a peek at some of its features.

In addition to its all-LED lighting, the new S-class will feature a massive 12.8-inch touchscreen on its minimalist, largely-devoid-of-buttons dashboard, second-gen MBUX infotainment system, a head-up display with augmented reality, all-wheel-steering, a world-first frontal airbag for rear seat passengers and a 100km electric-only range for the plug-in hybrid variant.

Jeep Grand Wagoneer Concept (Unveil; September 3)

After an endless stream of teasers, the all-new Jeep Grand Wagoneer will be unveiled – in close-to-production concept form – on September 3. Said to employ a body-on-frame construction, the Grand Wagoneer will be positioned as the new flagship in the Jeep range, and will have three rows of seats.

Teaser images have revealed the Grand Wagoneer concept will sport a dual-tone paint scheme, a massive glass roof featuring a decal of the map of Detroit, and will also have a richly-appointed interior with plenty of chrome trimmings. The Grand Wagoneer is expected to have petrol and diesel engine options, and the production-spec model is expected to debut sometime next year.

Maserati MC20 (Unveil; September 9)

The second week of September will bring the world premiere of the Maserati MC20. This brand-new mid-engined sportscar is Maserati’s first all-new model since the Levante SUV arrived in 2015, and will be powered by a 3.0-litre, twin-turbo V6 that revs to 8,000rpm and produces 630hp and 730Nm of torque. Maserati has previously stated it will return to racing with the MC20, which is expected to make its way to India sometime in 2021.

Kia Sonet (Launch; mid-September)

One of the most highly-anticipated launches of the year is that of the Kia Sonet compact SUV. Being Kia’s third – and most affordable – model for India, the Sonet has a lot riding on its sculpted shoulders, with most expecting it to replicate (or even better) the bigger Seltos’ success story. We know it will be offered in two main trim lines, will have a lengthy features list as well as a variety of powertrain options. The Kia Sonet’s India launch will take place in the second half of September.

Toyota Urban Cruiser (Launch; mid-September)

Another compact SUV set to be launched in September is the Toyota Urban Cruiser. The second model for India from Toyota and Suzuki’s global alliance after the Glanza, the Urban Cruiser is a derivative of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza. However, unlike the Glanza, the Urban Cruiser has a few visual differentiators in the form of a new grille and bumper, as well as a black-and-brown interior colour scheme.

Like the Brezza, the Urban Cruiser, too, will only have a 1.5-litre petrol engine with manual and automatic gearbox options. Expect the Toyota Urban Cruiser’s price to range from Rs 8-11.5 lakh (ex-showroom) when it is launched later this month.

Skoda Rapid automatic (Launch; mid-September)

The Skoda Rapid has gotten a new lease of life with the introduction of the 1.0-litre TSI engine, and one important option that was so far missing from the range will arrive this month – an automatic gearbox. This is a new, 6-speed torque converter unit paired with the 110hp turbo-petrol engine, and the Rapid automatic’s ARAI-rated fuel efficiency is 16.24kpl. Bookings for the Skoda Rapid automatic are already underway, and prices are likely to be announced closer to September 18, which is when deliveries begin.

Mercedes-Benz EQC (Launch; end-September)

It’s been a fairly long wait, but the all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQC SUV will finally be launched in September. Originally scheduled for launch in April, the EQC’s arrival was delayed a fair bit because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but it will finally be launched this month, becoming the first all-electric luxury car to go on sale in India.

Shipped to India in CBU form, the Mercedes-Benz EQC has a dual-electric motor setup – one at the front and one at the back, enabling all-wheel-drive – delivering up to a combined 408hp and 760Nm of torque. Power comes from an 80kWh lithium-ion battery pack which gives the EQC a claimed range of 417km on the WLTP cycle. Using a 7.4kW wall charger, the EQC can be charged to full in about 10 hours, and with a 110kW fast charger, can go from 10% to 80% charge in about 40 minutes. Expect the Mercedes-Benz EQC’s price in India to be around the Rs 1.5 crore (ex-showroom) mark.

BMW introduces zero-maintenance motorcycle chain

BMW Motorrad has announced a new drive chain design that is claimed to require as little maintenance as a shaft drive. The M Endurance chain will initially be offered in 525 pitch as an accessory, or a factory option, for the new BMW S 1000 RR and S 1000 XR. The tech will eventually make its way to other BMW models.

Visually, the M Endurance chain looks like any other X-ring chain, with a permanent lubricant filling between the rollers and pins. However, BMW says it has used a new coating material called tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C), a type of industrial diamond, on the rollers and bushings.

Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) coatings have been used as a process to reduce friction and increase hardness in parts like engine internals. BMW tells us that the ta-C on the chains provides similar benefits, and claims it performs somewhere between typical DLC coatings and pure diamond. According to BMW, ta-C coatings do not wear off metal surfaces and also offer a low friction coefficient. The result is a chain that requires no maintenance or cleaning – much like a shaft drive.

The M Endurance chain is listed on BMW UK’s online bike configurator as an GBP 100 add-on (Rs 9,768).

2020 Maruti Suzuki Dzire facelift: Which variant to buy?

The Maruti Suzuki Dzire facelift was launched earlier this year, with prices starting at Rs 5.89 lakh. The compact sedan is available in four trim levels – LXi, VXi, ZXi and ZXi+ and two engine-gearbox configurations to choose from. Read on to see which variant you should choose.

  • Four trim levels to choose from – LXi, VXi, ZXi and ZXi+
  • Dzire facelift is powered by a 90hp, 1.2-litre petrol engine with manual and AMT gearbox options
  • ZXi variants offer the best value for your money

Given below are variant-wise prices for the Maruti Suzuki Dzire facelift.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire prices (ex-showroom)
Dzire Manual Dzire AMT
LXi Rs 5.89 lakh NA
VXi Rs 6.79 lakh Rs 7.32 lakh
ZXi Rs 7.48 lakh Rs 8.01 lakh
ZXi+ Rs 8.28 lakh Rs 8.81 lakh

What’s powering the Maruti Suzuki Dzire facelift?

The Maruti Suzuki Dzire is powered by a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder ‘K12N’ DualJet petrol engine, which replaces the outgoing car’s 1.2-litre ‘K12M’ motor. This new engine produces 90hp (7hp more than the engine it replaces) and 113Nm. Although it misses out on Maruti’s SHVS mild-hybrid system which features in the DualJet-powered Baleno, the Dzire does get idle stop-start tech, which helps maximise fuel economy. There is no diesel engine option with the Dzire facelift.

Gearbox options include a 5-speed manual and an automated manual transmission (AMT), with the latter being offered with the K12N DualJet engine for the first time. Fuel efficiency for the Dzire facelift is rated at 23.26kpl for the manual version and 24.12kpl for the AMT version, according to ARAI.

The Dzire manual is the one to go for as it provides the better overall driving experience. However, if the majority of your driving is in stop-go traffic, you should opt for the AMT gearbox. It costs Rs 53,000 more than the manual but, it is more convenient to drive and more fuel efficient too.

What do you get in the Dzire LXi?

The base LXi, which can only be had with a manual gearbox, gets features such as dual airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, rear parking sensors, ISOFIX child seat mounts, front seatbelt pretensioners, a manual AC, tilt-adjustable steering, a front power outlet, a multi-information display and 14-inch Steel wheels.

How well equipped is the Dzire VXi?

For Rs 90,000 more, you get the mid-spec Dzire VXi which, over the LXi’s features, gets kit like power windows, central locking with speed-sensitive door locks, faux wood interior trim, a 2-DIN audio system with USB, CD, AUX and Bluetooth compatibility, four speakers, steering-mounted controls, a rear AC vent, a rear centre armrest, electrically adjustable ORVMs with integrated turn indicators, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, adjustable front head rests, wheel covers and ESP with hill hold assist (AMT only).

What features does the Dzire ZXi get over the VXi?

Over the VXi, the Dzire ZXi variants get 15-inch alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, front fog lamps, a rear defogger, tweeters for the audio system, keyless entry and go, automatic climate control, electrically foldable ORVMs and a 7-inch SmartPlay Studio infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The Dzire ZXi costs Rs 69,000 more than the VXi.

How feature-rich is the top-spec Dzire ZXi+?

The top-spec Dzire ZXi+ is loaded with features like automatic LED headlamps with LED DRLs, diamond-cut 15-inch alloys, a rear parking camera, cruise control and a colour MID. However, all this comes at a significant premium of Rs 80,000 over the ZXi variant.

Which Maruti Suzuki Dzire variant should you pick?

The variant that provides the best balance between features and price is the ZXi. The Dzire ZXi variants cost only Rs 69,000 more than the VXi variants but they pack in much more kit like the 7-inch touchscreen, push button start with keyless entry, automatic climate control and electrically foldable ORVMs. The ZXi trims also get larger 185/65 R15 tyres compared to the VXi’s 165/80 R14. The larger surface area not only helps the Dzire handle better but also aids in braking.

However, if you’re not on a strict budget, you should go for the ZXi+ variant. Although it costs Rs 80,000 more than the ZXi, it gets all the premium features like the automatic LED headlamps with LED DRLs, which helps you see the Dzire in its best light.

Honda Hornet 2.0 vs rivals: Specifications comparison

The Honda Hornet 2.0’s launch just a few days ago marked the Japanese manufacturer’s foray into the 160-200cc space in India. To see how it stacks up against its closest competition, we pit it against two of the most powerful 160cc motorcycles in our market and two popular, very similarly priced 200cc options.

The Hero Xtreme 200R also sits rather close to the Hornet 2.0 in terms of specifications, but its BS6-compliant iteration is yet to be revealed. This is why we haven’t taken the Xtreme 200R into consideration in this comparison.

How does the Hornet 2.0 compare on engines and power?

Powertrain
Honda Hornet 2.0 TVS Apache RTR 160 4V TVS Apache RTR 200 4V Bajaj Pulsar NS160 Bajaj Pulsar NS200
Engine 184.4cc, single-cylinder, air-cooled 159.7cc, single-cylinder, oil-cooled 197.75cc, single-cylinder, oil-cooled 160.3cc, single-cylinder, oil-cooled 199.5cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled
Power 17.2hp at 8500rpm 16.02hp at 8250rpm 20.5hp at 8500rpm 17.2hp at 9000rpm 24.5hp at 9750rpm
Torque 16.1Nm at 6000rpm 14.12Nm at 7250rpm 16.8Nm at 7500rpm 14.6Nm at 7250rpm 18.5Nm at 8000rpm
Power-to-weight ratio 121.12hp/tonne 107.51hp/tonne 133.98hp/tonne 113.9hp/tonne 157.05hp/tonne

The new Hornet features a brand-new engine. However, its specifications – like cubic capacity and compression ratio – are identical to that of the Honda CB190R and CBF190R sold internationally. That said, the India-spec engine on the new Hornet have slightly higher peak power and torque figures than those bikes. Compared to the TVS Apache RTR 160 4V, the Hornet 2.0 is only slightly more powerful, while the Honda’s power output is identical to that of the Pulsar NS160. However, the Hornet 2.0 produces 1.5Nm more torque than the Pulsar. It also has another advantage – its weight. The NS160 weighs 9kg more than the Hornet 2.0 and so, like you can see from the table above, there is a noticeable difference in their power-to-weight ratios.

However, in comparison to its 200cc rivals, it is a different story. The Apache RTR 200 4V and the Pulsar NS 200 make more power and torque – the NS200 makes a whole 7.3hp more. The two bikes also weigh more than the Hornet 2.0, however, the difference isn’t big enough to warrant a loss in the power-to-weight ratios.

The Hornet 2.0 is also at a disadvantage when it comes to how technologically advanced the engine is. It’s the only one here that employs an air-cooled engine. All its rivals use either oil-cooling or liquid-cooling and all four also use four-valve heads.

How does the Hornet 2.0 compare on size?

Underpinnings

Fuel capacity 12 litres 12 litres 12 litres 12 litres 12 litres

Where the Hornet 2.0 does have a bit of an upper hand on paper is with its chassis. The Hornet 2.0 does not use the same frame as the Hornet 160R, and instead uses a brand new chassis for India. What’s impressive is that the new Hornet is equipped with a USD fork, unlike its rivals that all come fitted with more conventional telescopic units. At the rear, all five bikes use a monoshock suspension. Like we mentioned earlier, the Hornet 2.0 is also the lightest motorcycle here.

Apart from the suspension, the Hornet 2.0 also boasts of the second largest front disc here – only the NS200 has a bigger front disc. On the flip side, the Honda’s rear disc is one of the smallest units here, only larger than the RTR 160 4V’s.

Honda has equipped the Hornet 2.0 with rather wide tyres – they’re the widest ones here and this should translate to improved cornering stability. Interestingly, the fuel capacity on all five motorcycles compared here is the same 12 litres.

How does the Hornet 2.0 compare on features?

Features
Honda Hornet 2.0 TVS Apache RTR 160 4V TVS Apache RTR 200 4V Bajaj Pulsar NS160 Bajaj Pulsar NS200
Instrument cluster Digital Digital Digital Digi-analogue Digi-analogue
ABS Single-channel Single-channel Dual-channel Single-channel Single-channel
Bluetooth connectivity No No Yes No No
Engine kill switch Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes

These entry level sport-naked motorcycles also boast of some modern features. For instance, all the lights on the Hornet 2.0 are illuminated by LEDs. Apart from that, the new Hornet also gets a digital instrument cluster that can be adjusted for five levels of brightness.

In comparison, the two TVS motorcycles boast of a more comprehensive list of features. Both the Apaches are equipped with TVS’ Glide Through Technology (GTT). This feature uses the fuel-injection system to inject a small amount of fuel into the engine that allows the bike to smoothly crawl forward through congested roads, without the need for throttle inputs. Meanwhile, the RTR 200 4V also comes with TVS’ ‘Smart Xonnect’ technology. This Bluetooth-pairable instrument cluster displays a plethora of information including lap times, top speed, incoming caller name and a lot more. A dedicated phone app also allows riders to track their ride telemetry and maximum lean angle achieved. The Apache RTR 200 4V is also the only bike here that offers dual-channel ABS – the other four come with a single-channel system.

Like we said above, the Pulsar NS160 and NS200 have not received a major update in a long time and offer almost no fancy, modern features.

Which bike has the freshest design?

The Hornet 2.0 may be very similar to the CB190R mechanically, but it’s quite different when it comes to the design. It carries the sharp design from the CB Hornet 160R, albeit, now in a bolder and more aggressive tone. The Hornet 2.0 features a new headlight and an X-shaped tail-light – a signature design carried forward from its predecessor. Honda has also added some more intricate design elements like a tank-mounted ignition key slot and faux air vents below the pillion seat, both of which give the bike a unique and modern stance.

The two TVS motorcycles here also feature fresh styling. In their recent transition to BS6, the RTR 160 4V and RTR 180 4V gained a new headlight design and some more minor tweaks that lend it a more aggressive stance. There's also some attention to detail in the new chequered flag graphics on the top of the fuel tank and in the knee recesses, as well as in the dual-tone-finish seat.

The two Pulsars, meanwhile, haven’t received a significant update in a very long time. That said, despite their age, the Pulsars don’t look outdated and their aggressive styling allows it to fit right in with its rivals.

How does the Hornet 2.0 compare on price?

Price
Honda Hornet 2.0 TVS Apache RTR 160 4V TVS Apache RTR 200 4V Bajaj Pulsar NS160 Bajaj Pulsar NS200
Price (ex-showroom, Delhi) Rs 1.27 lakh Rs 1.04 - Rs 1.07 lakh Rs 1.28 lakh Rs 1.07 lakh Rs 1.29 lakh

The Hornet 2.0 is one of the sportiest entry-level machines that Honda has introduced in a long time. At its Rs 1.27 lakh price point, it comes uncomfortably close to its more-powerful 200cc rivals. However, its performance is closer to that of the smaller, more-affordable 160cc motorcycles. Having said that, on paper, it does come equipped with a segment-first USD fork and looks like it should deliver punchy urban performance and good riding dynamics. While it may not be at the top of this comparison, specifications don’t paint the full picture and a road test should give us a better idea of how this updated Hornet stacks up against the rest of the 160-200cc segment in India.

Review: Hyundai Venue iMT review, test drive

What is the Hyundai Venue iMT, and why does it exist?

The Venue iMT is a new variant of Hyundai’s compact SUV that uses a rather unique gearbox and is offered with the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine. In concept, it’s halfway between a manual and an automatic, and with it, Hyundai aims to offer buyers a bit more convenience than a manual gearbox, at a price that’s not too much higher.

iMT meant to give drivers the best of a manual and an automatic.

It retains the 6-speed, H-pattern shifter of the Venue’s manual gearbox, but does away with the clutch pedal altogether. This means you can just row through the gears without worrying about engaging and disengaging the clutch.

Why does the car have red bits all over it?

This has nothing to do with the iMT gearbox, but instead is a new ‘Sport’ cosmetic pack that can be added to the SX, SX+ and SX(O) variants, irrespective of the engine and gearbox. Similar to Kia’s ‘GT Line’ on the Seltos and Sonet, albeit with no changes to the equipment list, it adds a few sportier accents to the interior and exterior to set it apart from the standard variants.

The Venue iMT is available with a new Sport variant that adds red highlights, among other cosmetic changes.

On the outside, you get a gloss-black grille with a red accent in its slats, smoked black headlamp and tail-lamp housings, red accents on the wheel arches, the base of the doors and the roof rails, and red brake calipers.

Red highlights and Creta's steering on offer in the Venue Sport's cabin.

Inside the Venue Sport, you’ll find an all-black cabin with red accents, a different set of fabric seat upholstery with red piping, and the ‘butterfly wing’ flat-bottom steering wheel from the Creta, with contrast stitching in, you guessed it, red. Other than that, the Venue remains the same well-equipped, high-quality, albeit not the most spacious, compact SUV it always has been.

How does an iMT gearbox work?

We’ve broken it down in detail before, but like we said earlier, it’s halfway between a manual and an automatic gearbox in concept. Technically speaking, it’s halfway between a manual and the most basic automated gearbox – the AMT, so we’ll use that as a reference point.

6-speeds to choose from in a standard H-pattern.

Mechanically, an AMT is a manual gearbox, albeit one that uses sensors and actuators to operate the clutch and shift the gears. An iMT, instead, uses sensors and actuators only to operate the clutch, while you have to change the gears yourself via a H-pattern shifter, like any manual. Think of it as a little robot inside the gearbox, calculating exactly when you want to shift and pressing and releasing the clutch pedal for you.

Like with an AMT, no clutch pedal required.

An ‘intention sensor’ detects when you move the shifter out of a gear slot and then figures out the clutch input required, and will then figure out which gear you’re slotting it into next, match the revs and pop in the clutch. And because an electronic brain is in charge of the clutch, you can never stall it.

How do you drive a Hyundai Venue iMT?

Even after years of driving, it’s certainly a new experience. You have to be in neutral to start the car, just as in an AMT, and once you slot it into first and take your foot off the brake, it gently creeps forward without any throttle input, just as if you’d stepped off the clutch carefully in a manual.

At first you find your left foot fumbling about for a pedal to press, but you soon learn to pin it to the dead pedal, as you would in an auto. It will even start in second gear if you’re on a flat surface, but try and start it in third or higher, and you will get a loud beep and a warning on the MID to shift to a lower gear. Similarly, if you accidentally leave it in a high gear and let the revs drop too low, you’ll get the same warning, but it still won’t stall, as eventually it will engage the clutch.

Those familiar with an automatic or a manual may find the iMT takes getting used to.

Once you’re on the move, you row through the gears just as you would in a manual, except without having to press a clutch, which again takes some getting used to. The process is impressively smooth at casual driving speeds, and you’re inclined to lift off the throttle every time you make a shift, but you don’t have to. It will let you shift gears with the throttle completely mashed to the floor, but if so, you’ll be met with a drop in revs, a slight pause in acceleration as the clutch engages, and some resistance from the gear lever. You can tell it’s not the ideal way to do things, and lifting off for shifts is just smoother.

The real advantage of this gearbox can be felt when you’re crawling in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Simply leave it in first or second and lift off the brake to roll along, applying throttle when necessary – and this is where it’s most like an automatic gearbox. Your left leg will thank you after a long, congested commute.

Where it gets interesting is starting from rest on a slope, which is where some AMTs can get caught out. In an iMT, however, because the software, sensors and actuators only have to work out the clutch input and not the gearshift, it works considerably better. On a mild gradient, you can easily step off the brake and onto the throttle without the car rolling back. This top variant, however, is equipped with Hill Assist Control, so it will be interesting to see how lesser variants manage without it.

When driving the Venue iMT, lifting off for shifts will make your drive smoother.

How does the Venue iMT compare to the manual and DCT auto?

You certainly don’t get that degree of control as you would operating the clutch yourself in a manual. There are times when you’d want to, for instance, slip the clutch and control the revs, such as if you’re stuck in sand or loose mud, or if you are faced with standing water (welcome to the club, Gurugram, from a Mumbaikar), and simply must drive through it. In situations like this, the iMT behaves like an automatic, and you just have to choose the right gear and floor it. It will, however, rev all the way to the redline and stay there until you shift, as in a manual.

A driving enthusiast would prefer a manual as well. For one, you can’t launch the Venue iMT hard. Whether you try to build up the revs and then slot in a gear, or hold it on the brake while in gear, the system prioritises smoothness and clutch preservation, so it will always push you off the blocks gently, rather than as quick as possible. On the flip-side, because an algorithm is controlling the clutch and not a human, it will likely let it last much longer.

The iMT has been programmed for smoothness and clutch preservation rather than performance.

Moreover, you don’t get the same involvement in the driving experience as you would in a manual, nor the satisfaction of executing a perfectly timed shift. Going flat out, when the revs are high and you want to shift as quickly as possible, though shifts stay smooth, you will still get a momentary pause and subsequent ‘head nod’ between gears, as the sensors and actuators catch up. Much like an AMT, then, it’s a powertrain that’s at its best when driven leisurely.

Compared to an automatic, an iMT obviously doesn’t give you that ultimate convenience of never having to shift at all, and the auto gearbox you get with the Venue’s 1.0 T-GDi engine is not a cost-effective AMT, but a high-tech dual-clutch auto. This DCT gearbox is a quick shifter too, whether you’re cruising, launching from rest, or going flat out, and should you want to take manual control, you get paddle shifters as well.

The Venue iMT is only available with the 120hp, 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine.

On performance, the iMT can’t quite match up to either – 0-100kph takes 13.47sec, a full 2.23sec slower than the Venue manual and 1.57sec slower than the DCT with the same engine, and that's almost entirely down to the fact that you cannot launch the iMT hard. Worth noting, however, is that while the Venue iMT we tested was a BS6 car, the other two were BS4 spec. The iMT is a lot closer to the manual, naturally, when it comes to in-gear or rolling acceleration, as they function the same way, though this is where the DCT is significantly quicker, by as much as 5sec – but that’s thanks, of course, to the automatic kickdown.

Though we haven’t done a proper fuel-economy test, expect the Venue iMT to come quite close to the manual as, once again, you’re in control of the throttle and the gear shifts, so it all depends on your driving style.

Should you buy one?

The price certainly plays a big part. The variants don’t match up like for like, but while the DCT auto costs somewhere between Rs 50,000-1,10,000 more than the manual, the iMT costs only Rs 15,000 more than a manual. For that small premium, the convenience you get, especially in slow traffic, is immense. In fact, the Venue’s cousin, the Kia Sonet, has foregone a manual gearbox altogether for its 1.0 T-GDi engine, giving you the options of iMT and DCT only.

Aside from the highlights, there's no change inside.

Interestingly, however, despite it being the more expensive technology, Hyundai offers the DCT in the lesser S trim at a lower price (Rs 9.65 lakh), while the iMT is only offered in the higher SX trim onwards, starting at Rs 9.99 lakh, which further confuses its positioning.

For some, the iMT will be the best of both worlds, giving you control of the gears like in a manual, with the convenience of an auto in the lack of a clutch pedal, and all at a reasonable price. For others, it might be a case of ‘neither here nor there’, choosing either the purity of a proper manual or making the price leap to the full-fledged DCT auto for the ultimate ease of driving. Will this intriguing new tech be a hit or a miss? Only time will tell.

McLaren unveils next-gen Monocell carbon-fibre architecture

McLaren has unveiled its new lightweight carbon-fibre architecture as it gears up to launch the first car in its hybrid Sports Series next year.

  • New Sports Series range is set to feature more affordable hybrid McLarens
  • New carbon-fibre architecture to underpin upcoming hybrid Sports Series range
  • McLaren is focusing on eliminating the weight penalty of a hybrid powertrain

What about the added weight of a hybrid powertrain?

Developed at the firm’s new Composites Technology Centre (MCTC) in England, the platform has been designed with a focus on lightness to offset the added weight of an electrified powertrain.

While it won’t be possible to fully cancel out the weight penalty of a hybrid system, CEO Mike Flewitt hopes to minimise it. He previously mentioned that his ambition was “to launch the hybrid at the same weight as the outgoing car”. He added: “We’re not going to hit that, but we’re going to be within 30-40kg. When you think the P1 hybrid system was 140kg, we've done a huge amount to manage the weight.”

It is said to use “world-first processes and techniques” in an effort to reduce weight while maintaining structural integrity and improving safety. Software determines the ideal shape and orientation for each sheet of carbon-fibre, for example, to optimise the shell’s strength and weight.

How far along is the development of the new architecture?

A prototype of the new ‘Monocell’ architecture – codenamed PLT-MCTC-01 (Prototype Lightweight Tub, McLaren Composites Technology Centre, Number One) – left the Rs 486-crore MCTC facility in 2019, with a crash testing programme set to get underway ahead of the launch of the first new-generation car. McLaren previously said the new site’s workforce would swell from 60 workers to more than 200 when the architecture enters production.

Earlier this year, the company’s first hybrid Sports Series model (the P1 and Speedtail belong to the Ultimate Series line-up) was spotted in prototype form, revealing a production design similar to that of the McLaren GT from the Super Series. Current Sports Series models include the 600LT570S and 540C

Who makes the carbon-fibre tubs for other McLarens?

Carbon-fibre tubs for the Speedtail hybrid hypercar and McLaren GT are produced by an Austrian firm called Carbo Tech, but MCTC will handle production of the new Monocell unit. The company is transitioning to a maker of electrified sportscars and will roll out hybrid powertrains with all of its Sports Series models, which will each be based on the new architecture.

What will the new car’s power output be like?

The as-yet-unnamed plug-in hybrid model will take its power from a twin-turbocharged petrol V6 mated to an electric motor of unknown capacity. Performance figures remain unconfirmed, but it’s expected to manage 32km of electric-only range from a single charge.

Why is the new lightweight carbon-fibre architecture so important?

McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt said: “The new ground-breaking vehicle architecture is every bit as revolutionary as the Monocell chassis we introduced with the company’s first car, the 12C, when we first embarked on making production vehicles a decade ago.

“This new, ultra-lightweight carbon-fibre chassis boasts greater structural integrity and higher levels of quality than ever before with our new MCTC facility quickly becoming recognised as a global centre of excellence in composite materials science and manufacturing.

“Our advanced expertise in lightweight composites processes and manufacturing, combined with our experience in cutting-edge battery technology and high-performance hybrid propulsion systems means we are ideally placed to deliver to customers levels of electrified high-performance motoring that, until now, have simply been unattainable.”

Review: Ogio Bajaj Hydration pack review

Hydration packs changed motorcycling for me. Being able to drink water on the move without having to stop greatly reduces the likelihood of cramps, dehydration and other nasty stuff that typically happens on really hot days. I always use one, even on my daily commute, because why not!

There are plenty of choices in the market, ranging from cost effective to super premium. The Baja 2l from Ogio sits closer to the more expensive side of things and brings backpacklike features to the table, along with the compact size and lower weight of a standalone hydration pack. The Baja is constructed of a high-quality mix of 150D ripstop material and 420D nylon. Ogio has managed to keep the total weight down to just under 800g (without water, obviously) and the strap system uses Kriega-style circular snapfit clasps. These ensure the bag holds snugly onto the rider without the need for a waist strap while still allowing a good freedom of motion.

The rear section has raised foam panels that facilitate ventilation against your back. You get two bottle-holder-style pockets on either side and an interesting clip-on elastic material that sits over the entire front of the bag. This can be used to hold larger items like a rain suit or a cycling helmet. Ogio says that the Baja has about eight litres of closed storage space, which is spread out between a total of four pockets. The large pocket at the rear is dedicated to the hydration bladder and it gets a silver insulation material that is supposed to help keep your water cool for 30 percent longer.

Ogio includes their own 2-litre hydration bladder, which uses a unique plastic spine. This is designed to spread the water across the bladder when it’s not full, thereby reducing the tendency to slosh about. The bladder is sealed at the top via two plastic clasps that are easy to operate. It can also be removed and cleaned quite easily. The clear PVC water pipe can be looped along either the left or right bag strap via small Velcro panels, depending on which is your preferred side. Ogio even has a clever, patent-pending clasp that holds the pipe in place on the strap, and this can also be installed on the left or right strap.

Everything works well, but my primary issue with this bag is that the bite valve is left exposed. It can be twisted to lock the stream of water, which is nice, but our dusty, grimy environment demands the hygiene of a dust cover. Since Ogio doesn’t sell this as an accessory, I’m on the lookout for an aftermarket solution.

Beyond this, the Ogio Baja does almost everything I want from a bag of this type, and if at least one of the compartments was waterproof, that would have sealed the deal for me. However, a browse of the company’s website suggests that the simpler Atlas hydration pack (holds three litres of water, but has only one stowage pocket with five litres of space) might be the smarter deal at Rs 6,499.

Next-gen Mercedes-Benz SL previewed in pre-production guise

The new Mercedes-Benz SL has been previewed in pre-production form in official images from the German carmaker. The images show a pair of disguised pre-production prototypes of the reborn sports car taking part in on-road testing near the company’s Immendingen technology centre. Both cars show a clear family resemblance to the AMG GT, while the different exhaust tip designs suggest multiple engine derivatives are being put through their paces.

  • New SL to share underpinnings with the next-gen AMG GT
  • Will be built at Mercedes’ plant in Sindelfingen, Germany
  • Expected to be powered by a choice of hybrid six- and eight-cylinder engines

What do we know about the new Mercedes SL?

The new Mercedes SL is set to be revived as a lighter, faster and more engaging model partly inspired by the brand’s motorsport roots, which is why overall development duties have been assigned to the AMG performance division. It will be the first time AMG has overseen development of any SL across its previous seven generations.

The new SL will be underpinned by Mercedes’ MSA platform which will also underpin the next-gen AMG GT. Aside from the platform, the SL is also expected to use the same axle assemblies, suspension, steering systems, 48V electric architecture and hybrid drivetrains, among other components, as the GT. The two models will be built alongside each other at Mercedes’ plant in Sindelfingen, Germany.

The adoption of the MSA platform is claimed to have had a positive effect on the styling. The new SL’s proportions are said to be more in keeping with earlier incarnations of the classic roadster than the current model.

Test mules – despite being largely under wraps – show off a long, sloping bonnet, prominent rear haunches and an angular front grille design. The rounded rear end is similar to that of the Mercedes-AMG GT sports car. The images also confirm previous reports of the new sports car getting a fabric soft-top in place of the fold-out hard-top like its predecessor.

The new SL is also expected to feature a 2+2 cabin layout, another departure from the current SL.

What engines will the new Mercedes-SL use?

Mercedes plans to offer the SL with a limited range of hybridised in-line six-cylinder and V8 petrol engines in a line-up that’s likely to include both standard and AMG models.

The range is understood to start with an SL 450 EQ Boost model powered by a 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder turbo-petrol developing around 370hp, along with an added 22hp in combination with an integrated starter motor. Further up will be the SL 53, which will run a more powerful AMG-tuned version of same drivetrainputting out around 436hp and added 22hp through electric assistance.

Among the V8-powered models will be the SL 500 EQ Boost and a range topping AMG SL 63. Both models will use Mercedes’ 4.0-litre V8 turbo-petrol engines paired with the company’s EQ Boost hybrid system. The SL500 EQ Boost is expected to have a similar power output to the SL 53, but significantly more torque. The SL 63 is likely to be offered in two states of tune, with the most powerful model developing in excess of 608hp and more than 30hp of electric boost. It is unclear if Mercedes will continue with the V12-powered SL.

All engines for the new SL will come as standard with Mercedes’ 9-speed automatic gearbox, with the AMG variants set to adopt the Speedshift electronics package for faster shift times.

Will it come to India?

Mercedes did sell previous iterations of the SL in India with the model first arriving in India in 2001. The last generation of the car was on sale in India in the early 2010s with the current-generation – revealed in 2012 – not being launched in the market.

It is likely that the SL, which will compete against models such as the Jaguar F-Type and the Porsche 911, could return to India with the all-new generation following its expected debut in 2021.

Weekly poll results: under-display cameras are exciting, never mind potential downsides

Last week’s poll shows that the image quality of selfies is not a priority – instead most people prefer a sleek-looking, waterproof phone. 75% of voters were in favor of under-display cameras while only 25% preferred the flip-up design. Durability really proved to be a key concern, beyond just water resistance. Many are still not convinced that the flip-up mechanism will last the lifetime of the phone. Also, the mechanism does take up a lot more volume. Asus claims the Zenfone 7 motor has more than double the torque of last year’s model and that the flip up can withstand 35 kg pushing...

BMW’s first M3 Touring officially previewed in new images

·        BMW M3 Touring likely to be revealed in 2022

·        BMW’s Audi RS4 Avant rival to feature more aggressive styling than the standard estate

·        Performance estate expected to share 480hp, 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine with M3 and M4

BMW will expand its line-up of M performance cars with the first ever M3 Touring. The first test prototypes of the performance estate have begun on-road development ahead of a likely reveal in 2022.

A short clip posted to BMW M's official Instagram feed shows a road-registered M3 Touring prototype leaving the performance division's Munich headquarters. It's wearing a full camouflage wrap, but we can see that it will bear a strong resemblance to the standard 3 Series Touring. However, differences include flared arches, added air intakes and a sports exhaust system.

It will also gain the vertically-oriented front grille that made its debut on the new 4 Series coupé, rather than the standard car's more familiar, horizontally aligned grille.

The new M3 Touring will give BMW a direct rival for the long-established Audi RS4 Avant for the first time. In a release, the firm described the hot version of the 3 Series Touring as a “dream come true” that will add to the “unparalleled model diversity” of its expanded M range.

The M3 Touring will sit alongside the new M3 super-sedan and M4 Coupé, both of which are set to be unveiled in September, and next year's M4 Convertible.

Our sister publication Autocar UK reported in 2018 that an M3 Touring was being strongly considered by BMW. The firm confirmed the model shortly before it began development work at its Garching facility near Munich. Track tests on the Nürburgring Nordschleife are set to follow.

BMW has yet to reveal many technical details of the M3 estate but has confirmed it will use its turbocharged six-cylinder petrol M engine. The M3 Touring is expected to share its mechanicals and powertrain with the new M3 and M4 – both are powered by the S58 twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre in-line engine making 480hp and 600Nm of torque in standard form.

BMW said that “further speculation on engine and performance is quite welcome” and confirmed that the machine will offer the M division’s signature wide axles, large front air intakes and quad exhaust pipes.

The estate will, according to BMW, also offer the full space and capacity of the regular 3 Series Touring. It added that it will fulfill “the hopes of all those who wish to take the M-specific interplay of racing-orientated performance and everyday suitability to the extreme”.

A release date for the M3 Touring has yet to be confirmed, although BMW said that it's in the early stages of a two-year development process, suggesting an arrival in late 2022.

While BMW has never previously offered an M3 Touring in the 34-year history of the M3, it did produce a feasibility study prototype based on the third-generation model in 2000. Although it was driven by a number of journalists, it didn't reach production.

BMW India had the previous-gen M3 and M4 in its line-up though has since discontinued them. There’s no word on whether the all-new models, including estate version, will arrive too.

The brand recently added a limited-run variant of the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo and is expected to bring the X3 M to India soon.
