Audi teases RS Q8 ahead of India launch

Audi is all set to launch its fastest and most powerful SUV, the RS Q8, in India. The model has been teased on Audi India’s social media channels and will go on sale later this month.

  • 4.0-litre, twin-turbo petrol engine makes 600hp and 800Nm
  • 0-100kph time of 3.8sec
  • Likely to cost upwards of Rs 2 crore

The RS Q8 is a Q8 dialled up to 11

The RS Q8 is powered by a 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine that produces 600hp and 800Nm. Power is channelled to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox and Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system. It also gets a host of other mechanical upgrades to its brakes and suspension. Official figures put the RS Q8’s performance in supercar territory with a claimed 0-100kph time of 3.8sec and a limited top speed of 250kph (304kph with the optional dynamic package). The RS Q8 does uphold the claimed numbers by being the fastest SUV around the Nurburgring Nordschleife in Germany.

How do you identify an RS Q8?

Exterior changes over the standard Q8 include a revamped 'Singleframe' grille and a large front air intake. The performance SUV also features custom side sills, a bespoke downforce-generating RS roof spoiler, a rear diffuser and large quad exhausts. 22-inch wheels are standard, while 23-inchers are likely to be optional.

Inside, the RS Q8 features bespoke Audi Sport trim, badging and digital display settings. There’s also leather and Alcantara sports seats, and an RS leather-covered flat-bottom steering wheel that’s part of the package. Like the standard Q8, the RS Q8 will be fully customisable.

How much will it cost?

The Audi RS Q8 will be brought to India as a full import, which means the base price will be easily north of Rs 2 crore (estimated, ex-showroom). When launched, the RS Q8 will be up against heavy hitters from within the larger VW family like the Lamborghini Urus and Porsche Cayenne Turbo.

Kia sells one lakh vehicles in India in 11 months

Kia Motors India has announced it has sold 1,00,000 cars in India. Kia achieved this sales milestone in 11 months, with its first model, the Seltos, having been launched in August 2019. The carmaker says this is the fastest any brand in India has ever done this. Kia had announced cumulative sales of 75,000 units in March 2020 – 7 months after the launch of the Seltos.

  • Kia achieves 1 lakh sales in 11 months.
  • Seltos sales alone near 1-lakh-unit mark.
  • New Sonet to launch in September.

Commenting on the occasion, Kookhyun Shim, MD and CEO, Kia Motors India said, 2019 marked an important year for Kia as we introduced our first car for the Indian market with an aim to become a household name in the country. We are overwhelmed with the response and acceptance that Indian customers have shown towards us. Reaching the one lakh milestone with just two products, in a record 11-month time, is a testament to our commitment to India.”

What about the individual sales of the Kia Seltos and Carnival?

Moving to individual performances, the Seltos has bagged sales of 97,745 units, climbing quickly into the list of best-selling utility vehicles in the country from the month of its launch and remaining a regular on that list and the overall best-sellers. The SUV received an update in June 2020 with a few feature revisions, discontinuation of two variants and more connected car features being added to the UVO Connect system.

The Carnival arrived in India at the Auto Expo earlier this year and has recorded sales of 3,614 units till date. Positioned as a more premium alternative to the Innova Crysta, the MPV is available in a choice of seating configurations and is generously equipped.

What’s next from Kia?

Kia is now gearing to launch its third model for India, the all-new Sonet compact SUV. Kia has high hopes for its latest model which is set to make its global debut on August 7 and launch in India in September 2020.

The Sonet will be manufactured at the carmaker’s plant in Andhra Pradesh, which is set to be the sole global production hub for the compact SUV. Kia has invested heavily in its manufacturing facility, having spent around $1.1 billion (Rs 8, 231 crore approx) with a further investment of $54 million (Rs 404 crore approx) being announced in May 2020, which is expected to help ramp up production further.

Lamborghini Essenza SCV12 revealed

Lamborghini’s new track-only Essenza SCV12 hypercar packs the company’s most powerful V12 engine yet.

Highlights

  • Only 40 examples of the Lamborghini Essenza SCV12 will be produced.
  • It gets a number of mechanical and cosmetic features inspired by Lamborghini’s GT3 race cars.
  • Lamborghini claims it will have a power-to-weight ratio of roughly 2hp per 1kg.

What is the Lamborghini Essenza SCV12?

The SCV12 has been designed by Lamborghini’s Squadra Corse racing division exclusively for track use and features extensive mechanical, aerodynamic and chassis upgrades over the Aventador on which it is loosely based. Only 40 examples will be built.

The firm has previously hinted that it is plotting an entry to Le Mans 2021 with a new hypercar category, and it's likely the SCV12 will provide the basis for its factory racer.

What engine does the Lamborghini Essenza SCV12 use?

It features Lamborghini’s 6.5-litre, naturally aspirated V12 engine in its most powerful state of tune yet, producing 830hp. This is even more powerful (by 10hp) than the Sián hybrid hypercar.

Other modifications to the powertrain include a redesigned dual-exit exhaust system, which improves performance and produces a unique engine note, along with a new Xtrac sequential 6-speed gearbox.

What is the exterior of the Lamborghini Essenza SCV12 like?

The design features a number of hexagonal elements, including the shape of the front headlights and roof scoop. It also gets 19-inch (front) and 20-inch (rear) magnesium wheels.

A major talking point is the comprehensive aero package inspired by Lamborghini’s Huracán GT3 racer. It comprises a dual-air intake on the bonnet, a roof-mounted air scoop, a sizeable front splitter and winglets that send air to the gaping side intakes, which in turn cool the engine and gearbox.

Together with the SCV12’s large, adjustable rear spoiler, the additions help the hypercar generate 1,200kg of downforce at 250kph.

What upgrades have been made to the Essenza SCV12’s chassis?

The body is built around a new carbon-fibre monocoque chassis, and although the car's precise weight has not been disclosed, Lamborghini claims a power-to-weight ratio of roughly 2hp per 1kg.

The track car’s lightweight bodyshell is divided into three separate components to allow for quick replacement of damaged sections during pit stops.

What is the interior of the Lamborghini Essenza SCV12 like?

The interior is features plenty of Alcantara and carbon, with a Y-shaped carbon structure dividing the driver and passenger seats. The SCV12 gets a multifunction steering wheel with an in-built telemetry display – modelled after those used in Formula 1 cars – a pair of FIA-approved carbon-fibre racing seats and red door pull straps in place of conventional handles to save weight.

What will the Lamborghini Essenza SCV12 owners get?

SCV12 owners will be enrolled in what Lamborghini calls an “exclusive club”, which will allow them to drive their car on various global race circuits from 2021, store the car in a new purpose-built hangar at the manufacturer’s Sant’Agata headquarters and take part in the same athletic training programme as Squadra Corse’s racing drivers.

Squadra Corse engineers will be on hand at the customer track events, joined by five-time Le Mans winner Emanuele Pirro and Lamborghini racer Marco Mapelli, who will offer track driving advice to the 40 SCV12 owners.

250 not out

Out of the 31 automotive manufacturers operating in India today, only eight car brands have been around for more than 250 months, and that’s indicative of a couple of things. First, the Indian auto industry is relatively young, with most brands not more than 10-15 years old – or, given the theme of this issue, should we say not more than 200 months old?

Second, the number of auto brands is still relatively small compared to other established markets, which means the entry barriers to the Indian market are very high. And lastly, you need serious staying power in India because let alone making profits – which in our ultra-low margin market is non-existent for many – even after 250 months, just survival is a challenge.

If they knew what a tough market India would evolve into, some of these global companies would not have taken the plunge into what turned out to be an ocean of red ink. But after digging their wheels into the sub-continent, the companies, hanging in there by a toe-hold after 250 months, still live in hope that all the billions they’ve thrown (and blown) away will one day yield returns. So let’s take a look at the companies that have joined us on this 250-month (and more) ride and examine how they’ve fared.

Maruti Suzuki Ltd (established 1981 as Maruti Udyog Ltd )

In September 1999, Maruti Udyog Ltd was still the market leader, a position it hasn’t relinquished since the birth of the company. But, 250 months ago, the Japanese automaker had just emerged from the toughest period in its history. After a bitter and prolonged fight with the Government of India (Suzuki’s equal joint venture partner) for control of the company, Suzuki managed to take charge soon after the NDA government came to power in 1998.

However, the three-year-long impasse between the warring partners resulted in a freeze on new product development and capacity expansion. With no fresh products to fight aggressive Korean newcomers like Hyundai and Daewoo, Maruti, used to its monopolistic position, faced serious competition for the first time. To make matters worse, it faced a strike in 2000, which crippled production for three months. Market share dropped to an all-time low of under 40 percent in 2001, and it was only in 2002, when Suzuki was firmly in the driver’s seat, that fresh products started flowing. And it couldn’t have got any fresher than the Swift, which launched in 2005.

The Swift was an inflection point for Maruti and it transformed the image of the company that was known until then for bringing cheap, but outdated and dull products. It was the first Maruti everyone wanted to have, and three generations on, its popularity remains undiminished.

The Swift and its derivatives, like the Dzire and Ertiga, built off the same platform, were a cash cow for Maruti. They sold in millions and made thumping profits for the company. Maruti also brilliantly milked the diesel wave that swept the market, with the Fiat-sourced 1.3 engine; and this too added handsomely to the company’s coffers.

Fast, agile and with an ear to the ground, Maruti is usually the first to spot new trends and open new segments. The AMT gearbox and compact MPVs are but a case in point. Yes, the company got it wrong by messing up its in-house diesel strategy and being very late to the SUV party, but these lapses notwithstanding, 250 months on, its leadership in India, especially in a post-COVID-19 scenario, stands unchallenged.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (established 1997 as Fiat Automobiles India Pvt Ltd .)

Few brands have evoked as much emotion as Fiat which is still a household name in India. It’s a brand with a tumultuous history, starting from 1951 when the founders of Premier Auto started assembling the 500 under license well before the era of the legendary Padmini. It was only in 1997, after the liberalisation of the auto industry that Fiat came to India as a company to cash in on what the legacy the Padmini had built. The potential was clearly there, as seen by the early success of models like the Uno, Palio and Linea.

However, poor Indian management, an even worse dealer network and the Turin HQ’s overall lack of focus and commitment to the Indian market is what finally doomed Fiat. The brand is now history but the company still exists in a new avatar as a part of the FCA Group, building Jeeps.

Ford India (established as Mahindra-Ford in 1994)

Ford started out in India as a joint venture with Mahindra & Mahindra in 1995, and after 24 years (or 288 months), it has come a full circle by collaborating once again with its former partner. The years in between saw Ford try to hack it on its own in the tough Indian market before it finally gave up going solo and threw in its lot with Mahindra in 2019, for the second time.

Ford India’s history and that of this magazine are entwined because the Ford Ikon, the maiden product to come out of the American carmaker’s wholly owned Indian subsidiary, was first revealed on the cover of Autocar India’s inaugural issue in September 1999, exactly 250 months ago.

The feisty Ikon got off to a great start, appealing to customers looking for something more exciting than an Esteem or Accent. Ford, however, threw its advantage away when it committed the same mistakes as other global OEMs. With the Indian market proving a lot tougher than anticipated, Ford took its foot off the pedal.

New product launches were few and far between, and the company became essentially a one-trick pony – its survival depending on just one model. After the Ikon, the Fiesta came in 2005 to hold the baton but arriving after a seven-year gap, it couldn’t emulate the Ikon’s success. The practical and affordable Figo that came in 2010 was a turning point and it made Ford more of a mainstream brand. The Figo’s popularity gave Ford newfound confidence to make India an important hub for its ‘B-cars.’ The gamechanging EcoSport, and the next-gen Figo and Aspire compact sedans placed the carmaker in crucial, high-growth segments. Ford was back in the race. In 2018, the company clocked its highest monthly sales, but sustaining the momentum was easier said than done. Rivals soon charged into the same segments, thus intensifying competition, and put Ford’s bestsellers like the EcoSport under huge pressure. Ford should have upped the ante and invested in refreshing its key models, but by then, the world had changed.

The automotive industry was facing its biggest disruption, with electric vehicles, shared mobility and connected tech coming of age. This has forced automakers to invest eye-watering amounts to adapt to a new ecosystem just to secure their future. For a cash-strapped Ford, this meant it could not keep throwing money into a market like India which, after 25 years, continues to be a bottomless pit with no signs of profitability. But rather than packing up and going back home, like GM did, Ford has chosen to share the costs, risks (and rewards) with Mahindra, and will jointly develop a slew of new products. This is a marriage that could finally work.

Honda Cars India (established as Honda Siel India Ltd in 1997)

The first-gen City laid the foundation for Honda in India and subsequent generations of the sedan formed the bedrock of the company. 250 months ago, the first-gen City was already the bestseller in its segment and so strong was its appeal, that Honda could get away with pricing it higher than the Mitsubishi Lancer, which is otherwise the more expensive of the two in other countries.

The City was an ‘Asian’ car tailored for this part of the world but soaked in Honda DNA, and that is what endeared it to its customers. The sedan was thrilling to drive, super-efficient and utterly reliable. It set the tone for the Honda brand, which the company capitalised on by going further upmarket. In 2001, the Accord was launched, followed by the CR-V in 2003. The Civic, which was a generation ahead anything else when it came in 2006, revolutionised the executive sedan segment. In July 2006, the month it was launched, Honda sold 2,441 Civics, a figure no other exec sedan has come close to matching. Honda hadn’t put a foot wrong in the Indian market, until its drastic change of strategy – one that traded class for mass.

The Civic and Accord were discontinued in 2012 and 2013, respectively, while the company focused on developing a range of cars below the City. But to be competitive in this space, Honda had to compete with Maruti, and to compete with Maruti, Honda had to do something it had never really done before – make cut-price cars.

That’s exactly what the Amaze, Brio and Mobilio felt like. They were built on a platform that prioritised cost over quality, diluting the Honda DNA in the process. Yes, the petrol engines were brilliant and the cars were reliable and efficient, but they lacked the engineering sophistication Hondas are known for. The carmaker also misjudged the diesel market and launched its in-house 1.5-litre unit just when the demand for diesel began falling off its peak.

The City is still the backbone of the company, bolstered by other products like the Amaze and WR-V. However, the ease with which Honda could pull customers into showrooms and make them buy its cars at a premium is long gone. 250 months on, the brand has lost its aura and it will take more than the next-gen City to bring back its old magic.

Mercedes-Benz India (Established as Mercedes-Benz India Ltd in 1994)

Starting off on the wrong foot is best exemplified by Mercedes-Benz India, whose maiden product was a big flop. The German luxury carmaker chose to launch the W124 E-class in India exactly at the time it was being replaced globally by the next-gen W210. This was Mercedes taking the Indian market for granted by expecting the luxury car buyer to buy an outdated model. The backlash was tremendous, with proud, well-travelled Indians spurning what they saw as a hand-me-down model from Germany. Mercedes quickly course-corrected by ditching the W124 for the latest W210 after just 2 years, after which, it never made the same mistake again. Since then, the carmaker has always brought its latest models not long after their international debuts.

Mercedes slowly added to its India range with the S-class and C-class in 2000 and 2001, respectively. For almost a decade, it enjoyed a complete monopoly at the topmost end of the luxury market, and this certainly made the company complacent.

So when BMW swooped in, Mercedes was certainly caught napping, and within just a year, the Bavarian rival snatched the lead to become the No 1 luxury brand in India. Before, Mercedes could recover, Audi, too, came to India, flush with parent company Volkswagen Group’s funds and drove straight into the hearts of luxury buyers to take the No 1 position away from BMW. All Mercedes could do was watch its rivals chomp into its once-100 percent market share. But clearly, Stuttgart wasn’t giving up. It sent some of its best executives to turn things around, and that meant several management changes and revamping of the dealer network. More importantly, this was the period when the oldest carmaker in the world was reinventing itself by jumping into new segments and completely revamping existing model lines.

India benefitted from this product renaissance, which included a new range of SUVs and a new compact-car family that addressed a much wider customer base. This was backed by a massive push in marketing, sales and service to win back lost customers and its lead in the luxury car race in 2015, which it has tightly held on to ever since.

Hyundai Motor India (Established 1996)

Speed, aggression and an unflinching commitment to India best sum-up Hyundai’s innings here. And that commitment can be seen in the models brought to India. No outdated or discontinued hand-me-downs from the mother plant; but only the absolute latest models, some of them introduced in India first before the rest of the world.

Rewinding 250 months, Hyundai’s maiden product, the Santro (its oddball looks notwithstanding) was well-established and chipping away at Maruti’s share. In fact, if there is one company that has given the market leader sleepless nights for the past 250 months, it’s this Korean automaker. But while Hyundai has always put its best foot forward, that foot in the early days wasn’t quite strong enough to stamp out competition.

Early Hyundais, with their toothy grilles, incohesive styling and weak engines, didn’t offer the same value proposition as the better engineered Japanese brands. However, the speed with which Hyundai kept reinventing itself over the past 250 months has made it more technologically advanced than other mass-market brands in India. With cutting-edge diesel and petrol engines, multiple transmission options, the best and latest features, and connected tech, Hyundai’s products are on top of their game. And let’s not forget its design language, which has metamorphosed from immaturely shaped cars to what many consider to be the gold standard in styling. That said, we are not sure that the current move to a more radical design language is the right direction.

Tata Motors (Established as TELCO-Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company in 1945)

Tata Motors, founded as TELCO, started out making locomotives, and then, in 1954, began producing trucks. Sixty years on, it is still the market leader in the CV market.

Tata Motors passenger-car division is much younger, and started in earnest with Ratan Tata’s revolutionary Indica, which was launched eight months before this magazine. The Indica laid the foundation for Tata’s passenger-car business and its success was a springboard for the company to look at bigger things, like the acquisition of Jaguar Land Rover in 2008.

However, it wasn’t an easy start for the Indica because, soon after the launch in January 1999, this fully indigenous hatchback was plagued with quality issues. The company couldn’t cash in on the huge order bank and after the initial euphoria evaporated and reality set in, sales started sliding. What saved the day was the company’s bread-and-butter Sumo, which was still selling in strong numbers.

Back then, the Sumo was the top dog in the Tata range, flying out of showrooms in the absence of serious competition. The Safari too was the ultimate Indian SUV you could buy at the time and it’s amazing how in just a short span, Tata leapfrogged Mahindra with superior products and technology. However, with the arrival of the Indica, Tata Motors lost focus on the UV side of the business and an opportunity to mount a serious challenge to Mahindra’s dominance in the UV market.

The focus was on saving the Indica, and that’s exactly what Tata Motors did, in what is considered to be the biggest turnarounds in the company’s history. In 2001, the Indica V2 version was launched; the company removed all the bugs, to make the car almost trouble-free. Almost. Even today, quality remains a moving target for the company.

The mid-2000s were the golden years for the Indica with the Indigo, Marina and Indigo CS versions being rolled out. There was even a long-wheelbase XL version. With multiple variants and body styles, the cheap-to-buy and even cheaper-to-run Indica found lots of takers, and sales peaked at 15,283 cars in March 2007.

The second-gen Indica (Vista), however, didn’t taste the same success. It didn’t look much different, so it had to compete with the original Indica, which continued to sell side-by-side and couldn’t quite keep up with the competition. In fact, with the new wave of manufacturers entering the market and competition escalating, Tata Motors struggles to keep pace. One of the company’s biggest weaknesses, which still persists, is the slow pace of product development. Big gaps between new model introductions and no proper lifecycle management of existing products made the company’s passenger division very vulnerable.

The only way Tata Motors could compete was on price and this had a direct impact on profitability. Exacerbating the problem was the inefficient structure of Tata Motors which had an impact on costs and productivity. The Nano brought Tata Motors into the global spotlight. It was a beacon for low-cost mobility and its noble intent of getting families off unsafe bikes and into cars captured the imagination of the auto industry and inspired companies like Renault to invent their own ultra-affordable cars like the Kwid. That the Nano was a flop is a different story but it showed the world that Tata Motors could still innovate and be relevant.

The middle of the last decade saw Tata Motors reborn under new top management which scripted a product offensive not seen before in the company’s history. Within a span of five years, the company launched six all-new models, and this began to pay dividends to a point where they actually reached profitability in Q3 2017 after racking losses for five consecutive quarters. In 2018 too, the balance sheet had just a tinge of red and it looked like a revival was on the cards, bolstered by a string of strong, superbly designed products.

However, things have gone pear-shaped for Tata Motors in the last two years. It just hasn’t been able to capitalise on its fresh model range and lost out badly to the competition. Also, it is still behind the curve in product development, with gaps in key areas. A limited choice of powertrains, no connected tech and a dealer network that is still stuck in time have been road blocks. But the biggest hurdle is the brand itself. The Tata badge simply cannot deliver the same premium as other brands, which is possibly the biggest barrier to profitability.

The glory days of Tata Motors, as seen in the past 250 months, are long gone and may never come back.

Mahindra & Mahindra (Established as Mahindra & Mohammed in 1945)

Mahindra & Mahindra Nahsik manufacturing plant.

It’s hard to imagine that 250 months ago, Mahindra’s flagship, its most luxurious vehicle was the very utilitarian Armada, the predecessor to the Bolero. It’s even harder to believe that since the Bolero’s launch 239 months ago (July 2000), this hardy but crude SUV is still a big money spinner for the company. What this tells you is that Mahindra is one of the most enduring brands in the market today and its most successful models are decade-old names.

This leads us to the Scorpio that came out in 2002; it singularly transformed Mahindra & Mahindra’s image as a rural UV maker, to a much more sophisticated brand. The completely indigenous Scorpio took the company six long years to develop but it was a quantum leap forward in technology and manufacturing processes for the company. It still sells in relatively decent numbers and is possibly the most iconic model in the carmaker’s stable.

Mahindra & Mahindra Chakan manufacturing plant.

Like Tata Motors, Mahindra’s pace of product development has traditionally been slow. The next big thing, which came almost a decade after the Scorpio, was the XUV500, the company’s first monocoque, which was a big learning experience. It had its fair share of niggles and some poorly engineered bits but the mouth-watering price it was launched at made customers forgive its flaws.

The acquisition of Ssangyong gave the company access to global resources, which Mahindra used cleverly to improve its capabilities in the areas of interiors, powertrains and manufacturing processes. The XUV300, a re-engineered Ssangyong Tivoli, is built to international standards, while the Marazzo too, a product of the company’s North American R&D facility, felt right straight out of the box.

Mahindra’s biggest achievement in the past 250 months is its range of world-class petrol and diesel engines which will give it an advantage in the new BS6 era. But engines alone cannot make a company. Like its domestic rival, Tata Motors, Mahindra does not have the cash of its rival global auto giants to invest heavily in new technology and products, expand its market share and, most importantly, come out of the COVID-19 pandemic in fighting shape. The joint-venture with Ford which opens up lots of international markets could well be the company’s saviour.

Going Places: A Drive of 250km

There is nothing better than a nice road trip to help you relax and unwind. But the destinations you choose need not be far-flung or require hours and hours of driving. There are some great spots in India, some of which are just a couple of hours away from city limits. Many also have multiple routes for you to get there, and sometimes going on an alternate road is all it takes to transform a journey. To mark our 250th issue, here are some of our favourite routes that involve around 250km of driving.

Bengaluru to Coorg via Mysore - 249km

Drive Time: 5-6 hours

Coorg can truly be described as a paradise. This sleepy hill station that’s almost always enveloped in misty air is a great place to rejuvenate oneself. Passing through the spice farms and coffee estates are some lovely driving roads, but it’s not just within Coorg, even the journey from Bengaluru to Coorg is beautiful. The driving distance via NH275 or the Mysore bypass is about 250km, and it’ll take you roughly six hours to cover with a few breaks. The roads in Karnataka have always been well maintained, especially in and around Bengaluru. However, the traffic in the city can be a nightmare, so to ensure a smooth exit out, it is best to head out early in the morning.

Once on the Bengaluru-Mysore highway, the well-surfaced four-lane highway is great to cruise on and it is easy to keep a decent pace. There are multiple routes to get to Coorg once you cross Mysore. We recommend getting off the NH275 after a town called Piriyapatna and then heading towards Siddapura – this section is a bit narrow compared to the highway but it is only for a small stretch until you get to Siddapura. From here onwards, the road until

Coorg is a road-tripper’s dream; it is smooth as silk and it snakes all the way until your destination. This winding section is the best stretch to enjoy your car’s handling, but keep in mind, it is a two-way public road. As for the views, there’s no dearth of lush green fields, and the weather is perfect for driving with your windows rolled down.

Kolhapur to Goa (Panaji) Via Chorla - 226km

Drive Time: 4-5 hours

Most of our choices are a great combination of a fantastic destination and great routes, but this one is truly a gem. The drive from Kolhapur to Goa (Panaji) on the NH4 is a part of the Golden Quadrilateral, and it passes through the outskirts of Kolhapur. Access to this four-lane highway from Kolhapur is easy from multiple towns around it. From Kolhapur, there are a number of routes that lead to Goa but the one that’s most exciting is in between Belgaum and Chorla.

As soon as you cross over from Maharashtra to Karnataka, the traffic thins out and the number of toll plazas reduce too, which makes the experience quite stress-free.

The drive to Belgaum is pretty direct and it doesn’t take too long either but, once in the city, it can get a bit boring as there’s no bypass to get through it. However, cross Belgaum, and you’ll find out why it is worth it. The roads open up and you leave civilisation behind.

In about an hour’s time comes our favourite section of this route – Chorla Ghat. The road is really enthralling and the smooth tarmac only encourages you to go for some enthusiastic driving. However, the road here is quite narrow, so you’ve got to be extra cautious. There are lovely tree-canopy sections that stretch on for kilometres together, and stay alert, as there is a high possibility of spotting some wildlife on your drive. Monsoon is the best time to drive this route, as the greenery gets richer and you see plenty of small waterfalls along the way. Mist and heavy cloud cover hang over the roads, so remember to drive safely. Once you experience this route, we bet you wouldn’t consider any other way to get to Goa.

Mumbai to Mahabaleshwar via Pali and Poladpur - 247km

Drive Time: 5-6 hours

The most straightforward and fastest way to get to Mahabaleshwar from Mumbai is via the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and then continuing onto the NH4, but we have a completely different journey for you.

Start early and get on to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, but exit at the Khalapur toll and take the first exit towards Pali. Yes, the roads aren’t as wide and smooth as the Expressway, but they are a hell of a lot more fun for enthusiasts. There is a bit of road construction going on around the Imagica amusement park, but as you get closer to Durshet, the road condition improves and this is where it gets exciting. There is very little traffic, especially early in the morning, and the narrow route goes through forests and so you’re surrounded by greenery. With the route being largely empty, you get the feeling of being away from the manic city.

Once you get past Pali, you join NH17, the old Mumbai-Goa highway, which has a bit of traffic; but it is usually flowing and doesn’t really hinder your pace. Making your way to Poladpur, you need to peel off the NH17, which puts you in the last and most enjoyable stretch of the drive. Sparse traffic and the winding road up to Mahabaleshwar is a driver’s delight.

Coimbatore to Periyar Via Munnar - 242km

Drive Time: 4.5 hours to Munnar, and 1-2 hours to Thekkady

There’s a cornucopia of reasons why Kerala is referred to as God’s own country. The state’s palm-lined beaches, backwaters, spices and coffee plantations, wildlife, and rich vegetation make it a sight for sore eyes and is therapeutic to most souls.

Once again, there are numerous routes to get there but our pick is an offbeat one. Head out from Coimbatore towards Pollachi; this road takes you through huge windmill farms and the views are breathtaking, to say the least. Later, you also get to drive through the Chinar wildlife sanctuary; so ensure it is open when you’re passing through. You also go through sandalwood forests, and if the season is right, you will be treated to waterfalls along the way. You’ll be on a single-lane, winding road with quite a few blinds corners and stretches of broken surfaces, but the 157km is so picturesque that the 4.5 hours of journey time passes by quickly. You can even spend a night in Munnar, which has plenty of hotels and lovely homestays.

The next part of the journey, from Munnar to Periyar, is just about 100km or so, but once again, it has a lot to offer. The road surface isn’t the best here, so an SUV is the preferred car of choice. This route will be best enjoyed by those who want to get away from the big city. Again, come monsoon and it gets even more gorgeous; it can, however, also get really foggy, so you may not really get to fully enjoy the drive.

To get to Thekkady, our best pick is the Munnar-Devikulam-Poppara-Udumbanchola route. As you leave Munnar, it’s all tea plantations and hills, but then the road breaks into a dense jungle. The forest roads are well maintained, with plenty of streams and waterfalls with fabulous viewpoints along the way.

Delhi to Bharatpur via Mathura - 225 km

Drive Time: 4-5 hours

There are various weekend drive away destinations from the busy metropolitan of Delhi and while some may wind their way up to the hills there is also fun to be had in driving on a wide open stretch of expressway. This one goes through the Yamuna Expressway to the Keoladeo National Park or formerly known as Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary. Now, this route might not be like the others in this story with twisty mountain roads or gorgeous scenic landscapes but it also offers a cool getaway from chaotic city life and one you can cruise to without any motion sickness on the ruler straight highway. Keoladeo is one of the finest bird sanctuaries on the planet and it hosts thousands of bird species. The best bit about this route is that there is very little to cut through before you get on the great section of road. As soon as you exit the city through Greater Noida, the six-lane Yamuna expressway greets you with its wide expanse. It is one of the best expressways in the country, with controlled access making it safe to travel at faster speeds. The speed limit here is a reasonably high 100kph, and you can maintain this almost all through on the eight-lane expanse (one service lane on either side). The sight of this wide-open highway and its smooth surface is very tempting to put pedal to metal, but beware that the highway authorities keep a close watch on speed limits.

The open road ensures you cut through it in no time and soon enough you have to peel off the Yamuna Expressway once you cross the second toll. It is a good idea to grab a bite at one of the food courts on the expressway. From here on, you hit a typical Indian single-lane highway and cross a few busy towns until you get to the other side of Mathura, which is about 40 mins away.

Once past Mathura, the traffic thins and you start seeing the more lush green country side as you travel along state highway 33 and arrive at the birding paradise of Keoladeo National Park, before you know it.

Darjeeling to Zero point (Yumthang Valley) via Lachung - 260km

Drive time: 3-4 hours to Gangtok, and 6-7 hours to Zero Point

Northeast India has some beautiful locations, and most of it is unexplored. Of course, there are some popular tourist spots but what we have is a drive for the bravehearts looking for some extra adventure. Darjeeling to Gangtok is just about 100km, with the road taking you through stunning tea gardens and luxuriant fields.

Get an early start in the morning and it is a thoroughly enjoyable road that will take you about four hours to cover at a reasonable pace. We recommend staying overnight at Gangtok and head out to Zero Point in the morning, which is 153km away, an approximate driving time of six to seven hours. Once there, remember there are no hotels near Zero Point, so we recommend driving back to Lachung for night stay.

The route out of Gangtok is fairly easy at first but it’s best you do the journey in an SUV. There is a chance of encountering landslides along the way but it takes you through the stunning Yumthang valley, and that makes every bit of the adventure worth it. You can expect mist, slush, stream crossings and some pretty risky terrain along the route.

The first pit stop is Toong, where the police will ask you to get a permit to let you through; it is a fairly simple process but a necessary one, since it is a border area. Another important detail is that no plastic is allowed beyond this check post, so you’ll have to discard those water bottles.

Beyond this is where paradise begins. Imagine fields of flowers, puffy clouds and a blue sky, yaks grazing... you are at an elevation of 11,000 feet, so the weather is spectacular as well. From February to mid-June, fields of pink and purple rhododendrons make you feel like you are driving through a painting. Forget Switzerland or Keukenhof, you’ll get all those sights here. The road climbs to 15,000 feet, taking you through some mind-blowing locations. Waterfalls roaring down thousands of feet, jagged mountains, and not a soul in sight – it feels like you have truly left civilisation behind.

Citroen C5 Aircross India trial production begins

Citroen India has begun trial assembly of its first product for our market, the C5 Aircross SUV, which is slated for a market launch sometime in early 2021. Here’s what’s new about it:

  • Citroen C5 Aircross to be locally assembled from CKD kits.
  • Will be sold in a single, fully-loaded trim, costing upwards of Rs 30 lakh.
  • Citroen to launch made-for-India compact SUV and other models in future.

What’s new on Citroen’s India-bound C5 Aircross SUV?

The company has recently begun trial assembly of a handful units of the C5 Aircross SUV at CK Birla’s facility in Thiruvallur, Tamil Nadu. These made-in-India units will be used for testing across the country, according to sources. While test mules of the C5 Aircross SUVs have already been seen in India, those were fully-imported units.

Citroen C5 Aircross: India launch plans and expected pricing?

Citroën announced earlier this year that the India launch of its C5 Aircross will be delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and will now happen sometime in January-March 2021, instead of late 2020. Sources tell us that, since the C5 Aircross will be “locally assembled” and not “locally made”, prices are expected to start upwards of Rs 30 lakh (ex-showroom).

The SUV will be sold in a single trim and is expected to come with features like an electronic parking brake, dual-zone climate control, a hands-free tailgate, split-LED headlamps with DRLs, a panoramic sunroof, a powered driver’s seat, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument screen.

Powering the SUV will be a 2.0-litre diesel engine good for 180hp, mated to an 8-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox. The SUV was earlier pegged to come with a less powerful 131hp, 1.5-litre diesel unit, but the additional performance will be welcome at this price point.

What else is Citroen planning for India?

Citroen doesn’t plan on selling large numbers of the C5 Aircross SUV in India SUV. Instead, the French brand is betting big on its future made-in-India models from its ‘C-Cubed’ programme, which should be the volume sellers. These models will have a high level of local content – the C21 compact SUV is expected to achieve 90-95 percent localisation, which could mean a starting price of about Rs 7 lakh.

How many Citroen India showrooms are expected in first phase?

The first showroom in Ahmedabad for the Citroen brand is almost ready. 10-15 outlets – all of which will be based on the brand’s ‘La Maison Citroen’ concept – are expected to be introduced in the first phase.

Harley-Davidson to cut 30 percent of planned models

In May 2020, Harley-Davidson announced its new Rewire business model, and more recently, the company announced that it was cutting 700 jobs worldwide. Now, the American motorcycle manufacturer has stated that it will be streamlining the number of models it has planned for its line-up by about 30 percent.

  • Thirty percent of planned models to be cut

  • Pan America adventure bike goes on sale early next year

  • New five-year business plan called Hardwire to be revealed by Q4

Over the past year or so, we’ve seen multiple Harley-Davidson concept motorcycles emerge, which even included a faired model. However, some of these models may not see the light of day, owing to this latest announcement.

Details aren’t clear just but, but Jochen Zeitz, chairman, president and CEO, Harley-Davidson, has said that Harley will be launching its new adventure bike, the Pan America, in Q1 next year. Interestingly, no mention was made of the Bronx streetfighter, but we expect that it will also debut sometime later next year.

The American company says that it will balance future products between its new segments and its current strengths – which explains the recent emergence of new Harley-Davidson air-cooled V-twin engine patents. The company also announced that it will be shifting its traditional new-product launch timing of August to the first quarter of next year.

Another interesting bit in the company’s release stated that Harley-Davidson is looking at optimising its dealerships. There will be a focus on inventories to help reduce situations of discounting and price promotions, thereby helping preserve the premium value of the brand.

Harley says that it plans to thin down the number of countries it is present in, with a  focus on approximately 50 ‘high-potential markets’ around the globe. “The company is evaluating plans to exit international markets where volumes and profitability do not support continued investment in line with the future strategy.”

Business in India has been flat in India for the last few years, but our market should be safe given that Harley remains one of the top big bike players, has a strong HOG community, and has a manufacturing plant in Haryana for the Street platform as well as CKD operations.

We expect information updates to keep coming over the year, but the big announcements are likely to happen in Q4. This is when Harley-Davidson will talk about its new five-year plan called Hardwire, which goes into effect in 2021.

Driving in the time of COVID-19

What began as a worrying outbreak in a distant land has ended up changing life, as we’ve known it, for almost everybody on the face of Earth. From a time when even pausing for a minute in a day felt like a luxury, nobody – even in their wildest dreams – would’ve believed we’d go for well over two months in 2020 without stepping out of our houses and having little to no opportunity to drive. The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has rocked India, too, and even though cases are still on the rise, many are looking to head back out and restore some balance to their lives. As we take baby steps towards making a return to normalcy, maintaining hygiene and practicing social distancing will be of paramount importance in nearly everything that we do, including driving. As will be the case with almost every process, we will need to incorporate new habits into our driving practices, too. Here are the things one will need to be mindful of the next time you hit the engine-start button.

Sanitisers And Maska – The New Must-haves

Everyone has a list of items they make sure to carry when leaving home, and in most cases, it’s the wallet, house and car keys, smartphone, and any other item influenced by personal habits. Now, that list will mandatorily include a face mask and hand sanitiser. As it stands, COVID-19 has no cure, so prevention will have to be practiced rigorously, and stepping out of the house without either of these items will be a strict no-no. It is advisable to always carry a bottle of hand sanitiser on you, but avoid leaving it in the car, as sanitisers are usually alcohol-based and the high heat in a car parked under the sun can result in a potential safety issue. As for face masks, it would be a good idea to have a bunch of them in the car, for times when you forget to get one from home before leaving – which, as with any other item, is quite likely to happen at some point.

Change Is Necessary

In the present scenario, the FASTag electronic toll collection system has become as important as it has ever been. When interaction with others is being minimised, the use of these RFID tags to pay toll comes in handy, and it’s advisable to have a FASTag installed on your vehicle and the balance topped up at all times, especially if your commutes involve driving on the highways. Try and restrict cash payments to a bare minimum, and rely on digital payments wherever possible. And in case paying online is not an option, make sure you carry exact change for any toll payments you may have to make.

More Contact-less

Of course, at this time, there will also be those who will either be looking to buy their first vehicle or have an existing vehicle serviced. In both cases, it’s advisable to follow the contactless route and let the showroom or service centre come to you, instead of having to visit them yourself. Almost all carmakers in India have gone digital with their sales and service facilities, and all you need to do is login, make a booking/schedule a service, and wait for the dealership to get back to you. While most outlets are following stringent sanitisation measures, if you have to, choose to have a test drive vehicle sent to your home. Dealers are only happy to offer pick up and drop services at this time, so try and avoid visits to an outlet and complete as much of the process as possible from the comfort of your home.

Packed House? No, Thanks

Mass gatherings are unlikely to be allowed anytime soon with the risk of a second wave of COVID-19 cases looming large. A number of major cities in India have spots that are a hit with the locals, especially areas with a lot of food outlets, which witness a major increase in footfalls and traffic on weekends and holidays. Those trips, unfortunately, will have to be put off for the foreseeable future, as it’ll be extremely important to make sure you and your vehicle don’t come into contact with big groups of people. It’s advisable to avoid leaving your car parked in an area frequented by many, where it’s likely to come into contact with other people who may lean against it, or even sit on it.

Sanitisation A Must, Inside And Out

It won’t suffice to only sanitise your hands and wear a mask when you do step out for a drive – it’ll be equally as important to sanitise all touch points inside and outside the vehicle, and regularly, that too. All exterior and interior door handles, the steering wheel, all other major controls, the glovebox lid, interior rear-view mirror will all have to be cleaned on a regular basis. There will be many who will choose to do it themselves, but going forward, service centres will offer to carry out – for a fee, of course – an  extensive exterior and interior cleaning and sanitisation process on vehicles for those who’d rather have someone else do it for them.

Avoid Speeding

Fewer cars on the road means little to no traffic, and that, for many – especially in densely populated cities such as Mumbai – is a rare sight. Empty roads are erroneously viewed as an invitation to drive faster than permitted (or even necessary) and that could lead to fully avoidable road accidents. According to a report by the SaveLife Foundation – which is working to further the cause of road safety in the country – there were over 600 crashes during the first two phases of the lockdown (between March 24 and May 3) resulting in 140 deaths. The report states the cause of most of these crashes was overspeeding. While the sight of an open road is certainly tempting, it’s always better to err on the side of caution and drive within the speed limit.

Skoda Enyaq iV interiors revealed

Skoda has previewed the interior of the new Enyaq iV, its first electric model built on the Volkswagen Group's MEB platform. The Skoda Enyaq iV unveiling will take place on September 1, 2020.

Highlights

  • The MEB platform’s lack of transmission tunnel helps maximise interior space.
  • Skoda claims the cabin space on offer will be similar to the Kodiaq SUV’s, despite its smaller dimensions.
  • No plans have been announced aboutthe Enyaq iV coming to India.

What platform does the Skoda Enyaq iV use?

The Skoda Enyaq iV SUV uses the same underpinnings as the new Volkswagen ID.3 hatchback. Designers have exploited the MEB platform's lack of transmission tunnel and long wheelbase to create what, according to Skoda, is a visually airier cabin.

What are the interiors of the Skoda Enyaq iV like?

There are a number of new features making their debut on the Enyaq and are expected to appear on future Skoda EVs as well. These features include things like a storage cubby underneath the centre console and a multi-level dashboard.

The carmaker has also announced that the all-electric SUV will have 585 litres of boot space, a 13-inch central touchscreen and a head-up display with augmented reality.

As per Skoda’s claims, there will be generous legroom for rear passengers and that the interior space will be similar to the Kodiaq SUV’s, while being shorter than the new Octavia on sale in international markets.

How many trim levels will the Skoda Enyaq have?

Skoda says it has done away with the conventional trim-level structure of its current line-up, in favour of a range of new 'design selections', each of which use sustainably produced and recycled materials. They will be clearly split into separate 'themes', with an additional range of option packages available.

What will the Skoda Enyaq be powered by?

Skoda has confirmed that, similar to other MEB-based machines, the Enyaq will be offered with the choice of rear and four-wheel drive, three battery sizes and five power outputs. The largest battery will be a 125kW unit giving an official range of 500km.

Will the Skoda Enyaq iV come to India?

As things stand, it won’t. Currently, Skoda is focusing on updating current models in its India portfolio. The company has already launched the refreshed Superb and the Rapid 1.0 TSI sedans, along with the Karoq SUV. It will soon bring in the Kodiaq petrol as well. The carmaker is expected to introduce its midsize SUV,based on the Vision IN concept, in India by 2021.

Internationally, however, the Enyaq is due to go on sale in 2021 and will be a key part of Skoda's plan to launch 10 electrified models under the iV sub-brand by the end of 2022.

Skoda India enhances online buying with new facilities

Skoda Auto India has expanded its digital sales service, which it calls the Skoda Contactless Programme, in an attempt to further reduce the need for customer walk-ins at dealerships during these times of social distancing.

  • Online bookings of Skoda vehicles started earlier this year
  • Live consultations and virtual product demonstrations now available
  • Digital initiatives aimed at reducing physical interactions

You can buy a Skoda online

Skoda India had introduced its online bookings service earlier this year, but has now expanded the service to include the next steps in the car buying process, like product consultations and demonstrations. Coupled with test drives, which can be arranged at the customer’s residence, the need to physically visit a dealership is greatly reduced.

Skoda Contactless Programme: How does it work?

A prospective buyer can sign up for a contactless demo by logging in to the Skoda Auto India website and choosing their intended model. A link will then be sent to their mobile or email address, which will take them to a video conference with a Skoda executive for a live consultation and virtual product demonstration. All this can be done via smartphone, tablet or personal computer, and is available at all of Skoda India’s 80-plus dealerships.

Speaking of smartphones, the Czech automaker also offers its MySkoda app for iOS and Android devices, which customers can use to locate their nearest dealership, make service appointments, check their service history and billing records, and contact customer care.

Weighing in on the company’s latest move, Zac Hollis, brand director, Skoda Auto India, commented, “The latest initiative provides customers with an opportunity to explore and experience our exciting new range of products from the comfort of their home.”

Which Skoda cars can be demoed online?

Digital consultations can be availed for the complete Skoda range which, for now, includes the Rapid mid-size sedan, Superb premium executive sedan and the Karoq mid-size SUV. Similar facilities will be extended to the upcoming model range as well.

Skoda recently introduced a new Rider Plus variant to the Rapid line-up priced at Rs 7.99 lakh (ex-showroom, India). The company is now gearing up to add an automatic transmission option to the Rapid and bring back the Kodiaq SUV with a petrol engine in the coming months.
