The world seems to be awash with SUVs, with each one claiming to be better than the other. But when it comes to the real deal, nothing beats the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza which has been among Maruti Suzuki’s best-sellers ever since it was launched four years ago. Today, with an all-new powerful and BS6-compliant four cylinder petrol engine under its hood, the Vitara Brezza, which was conceptualised as an SUV from the ground up, is all the more compelling.
Big On Power
The Vitara Brezza’s 1.5-litre K-Series BS6-compliant petrol engine is a capable performer and those capabilities become evident as soon as you hit the road. As far as numbers go, the four cylinder unit — the biggest in its segment — is rated at 105hp at 6,000 rpm and 138Nm of torque at 4,400rpm. The larger displacement helps in several ways. You get power when you need it; power delivery is linear and refined; and a larger capacity engine works equally well at both low and high rpms. The Vitara Brezza is quick off the blocks in cities and negotiates urban traffic in an assured, no-fuss manner. And, out on the highway, its versatility shines through, both when it comes to travelling at a fair clip and executing overtaking manoeuvres. It also scores highly on the NVH front and is a quiet but consistent performer.
A lot of engines with larger displacement often stumble on the fuel efficiency front, but not the Vitara Brezza’s unit. The 1.5-litre engine teams up with a slick-shifting manual gearbox or a four-speed torque converter automatic that adds convenience to the equation. The cutting-edge automatic transmission on the Vitara Brezza is in a league of its own, as it is equipped with Smart Hybrid technology which has an Integrated Starter Generator paired with a dual battery system in the place of a traditional alternator. What this means for folks behind the wheel of the car is better acceleration and performance. Among the other advantages of having a car with the Smart Hybrid tech is the idle Stop-Start function that contributes to the Vitara Brezza’s impressive fuel efficiency credentials. The Vitara Brezza automatic’s figures — 18.76kmpl — are class-leading, and the manual version returns an equally admirable 17.03kmpl.
Big and Bold, Inside and Out
The Vitara Brezza affords drivers a commanding seating position and is larger than it looks on the inside. That is not surprising when you consider that the Brezza is built on the same Suzuki TECT platform as the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross, which of course is a much larger vehicle. And that is among the things that make the Vitara Brezza stand out from several of its competitors that are built on platforms shared with hatchbacks. This key differentiator lends a much bigger, bolder and stronger stance to the Vitara Brezza. It not only makes the overall dimensions much bigger but also gives a very butch appeal to the car, which is the hallmark of the SUV segment.
While it is a sub-four-metre SUV, Maruti Suzuki has made excellent utilization of space inside the Vitara Brezza, which has a wheelbase of 2500mm and dimensions of 3,995 mm (L) x 1,790 mm (W) x 1,640 mm (H). The interiors are both tasteful and commodious, and the 328-litres of boot space can be further enhanced by lifting the rear seat base and folding the 60:40 split rear seats. The SUV’s cabin is also studded with features, and these include cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, and the latest SmartPlay Infotainment system that is equipped with a 17.78cm touchscreen. The SmartPlay system supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, provides live traffic updates, voice recognition, vehicle alerts, and access to curated online content through AHA radio, all of which makes living with and driving the Vitara Brezza a seamlessly connected experience.
Being a Maruti Suzuki product, the Vitara Brezza has the safety angle covered as well and is equipped with both active and passive safety features. These include Anti-Theft Security System, ABS with EBD, Engine Immobilizer, and Reverse Parking Sensors, and High-Speed Warning Alert that come as standard across all variants.
Big on Style
The Vitara Brezza was always a good-looking car with clean lines and an attractive stance. And, unlike pumped-up hatchbacks that masquerade as SUVs, the Vitara Brezza is different. It doesn’t just look the part, but its high-seating position and upright pillars give that all-important feel of driving an SUV. The latest Vitara Brezza sports subtle but tasteful touches that make it an even more attractive proposition. Complementing its clean lines and muscular good looks is the front grille that now features a smart new four-slat design, LED Projector Headlamps with DRLs — and fog lights — that also do duty as indicators and a bigger scuff plate. The Vitara Brezza also gets Distinct LED Tail Lamps. And last but not the least, the new 16-inch precision-cut alloys look sharp. If you’ve always loved how the Vitara Brezza looked, you’ll like it even more now.
More for Less
The new Vitara Brezza offers a lot more of everything, and looks and feels premium. And for a car that checks all boxes — powerful engine, feature-packed interiors, space, connectivity options — it is extremely affordable. Prices range between Rs 7.34 lakh and Rs 11.4 lakh. Clearly, Maruti Suzuki has once again hit a home run with the all-new Vitara Brezza. Now, it’s your turn.
